wall and floating wall project for home cinema setup :-)

hi guys

i have just started to fill in the wall from our front room to our dining room,in order to put up th e tv and to make room for a projector.

My AV kit list is below

Samsung LE52M86
Onkyo 905 amp
Virgin V+
sanyo PLV-Z700 projector
Panaview 92" projector screen
KEF 3005se speaker package
XBOX 360 Elite
Playstation 3 60GB
Nintendo Wii

i had all of this kit on a alphason Apex APX50 floating stand
which i will be selling if anyone is interested in it.

we decided to do a floating wall of which many people have done on these forums, but we decided to hang the tv inside the floating wall and have AV shelves inside the wall.

in order to do this we had to build a stud wall and start all from scratch.
i will be adding pictures as we go along, but this wont be a quick build as me and my mate alistair can only work on it on weekends (thats pleased the wife lol).
anyway i hope you guys like what we are doing and enjoy the photos over the next few weekends.

Re: wall and floating wall project for home cinema setup :-)

right we are now at the stage of getting the 2" x 2" baton on the walls ready for the floating wall.
this is on top of the 4" x 2" timber

all the outer shell is almost complete on the front,we then need to do the rear of the wall in the dining room, its all coming along very nice :-)

the kef centre 3005se speaker even has its own hole in the wall to sit in :-)

i guess it may be a little hard to tell what we are aiming for at the moment via the pictures, but bear with us and hope fully you will like it as it takes more shape :-)

ps3 = wireless
Xbox = wireless
Wii = wireless

still just working out what to do with the projector, not sure if i should take off the coving on the ceiling and put the cables behind that and put up new coving or just put the projector next to the sofa on the side table :-/

we hope that we will not see any wires from anything :-) i cant wait for the boxing in to start so you guys can see the design we have done..

Re: wall and floating wall project for home cinema setup :-)

ok a picture is now up for you guys to take a look at, i tried one with the flash off to get a better effect of the lighting so the room would be dark but it will not upload the photo as its over 2 megs, and with the flash its under 2 megs and it uploads but does not show the rope light effect as well as it could.

Re: wall and floating wall project for home cinema setup :-)

ok projector set up very fast and as i said only projected onto a dark brown wall, but it is still very nice to look at,the picture does not do it justice tbh,but i could not wait to try it out :-)

i thought watching the samsung 52" was good but this is something else :-)
cant wait to see it on a proper screen, just putting a piece of white paper up shows image about 50% better.
cant wait till the weekend to get more done :-)
shame my m8 cant help me till sunday,so i will crack on saturday morning,so wont get any more pics up till sunday night guys.

hope you guys keep following the work :-)

Re: wall and floating wall project for home cinema setup :-)

right got some more done on sunday still loads to do but will be doing the rest of the work next weekend as its the bank holiday :-) so should get it just about finished.

we have got the tv mounted and the box made for the kef centre speaker.
we just need to make the 2 boxes below the centre speaker for the Onkyo 905 ,virgin v+ on the lower shelf and the xbox360 ps3 and wii on the top shelf.
Then we have to clad the front with 12mm mdf,all the boxes are made from 18mm mdf for some extra strength.
The last pic is a bit messy as we just got the V+ in so we could watch some tv :-)
Picture 16 is the rear of the tv we have used 4x2 timber and it is solid as a rock ;-).
we will be building a floating wall behined the tv in the dining room and maybe wall paper the floating wall only should be a nice effect.
still not decided what colour/colours to do in the room with the tv,not sure if we should do it the same colour as the back wall or a darker colour inside the boxes and light colour on the front or vice versa, any ideas guys ?

Re: wall and floating wall project for home cinema setup :-)

right got a small update with regard to the projector :-)

i had the sanyo Z700 but it just wont go where i want it to go,and it is too big to go on the ceiling so,it has to go back.
So i have now placed a order for the Optoma Themescene HD20.

Massive thanks to Saeed from projector point for sorting this all out for me.

Re: wall and floating wall project for home cinema setup :-)

just a small update

i now have the optoma HD20 themescene and all i can say is WOW what a great PJ and its smaller than a PS3 :-)

We are going to be working on the wall saturday ,sunday and monday so will get it almost all done ;-)
But we may add in a lighting trough around the room which should look good with the lighting around the floating wall and also its a great way to get the speaker wires and PJ cables to the back of the room ;-)

anyway more updates saturday sunday monday...

Re: wall and floating wall project for home cinema setup :-)

Hi All - Wifey here - my job is to update on today's progress. Well the boys have been working really hard - consumed inappropriate amounts of tea and cherry bakewells - but am pleased to say that they are satisfying my requirements with the task in question...... the rope light is fixed, integral boxes have been filled, mdf primered and undercoated and are in place, rear frame is up. Front MDF floating wall will be going up tomorrow (yipee), then more sanding, priming, undercoating, tea, cherry bakewells etc....

Re: wall and floating wall project for home cinema setup :-)

ok more work done ,and some more pics :-)

we have got most of the 12mm mdf front on , all the boxes for the av equipment are made and filled/sanded/primed/painted ,so we now just need to do the top coat in the colour we decide on.
Rope light is fixed with the rope light strips ,we also intend to have the rope light behind the tv to give a nice glow from behind.
We have managed to get the front of the screen perfectly flush with the front of the mdf floating wall(sorry picture shows it but not very well)
We are also going to implement a lighting trough around the room.
Hopefully all the electrics will be done sometime this week ,hope to have 3x fused/switched spurs in the room, with 3x double sockets attached to them.
We are also going to attach the Projector screen to the floating wall and box it in but leave a small gap for the screen to pull down, but the projector screen casing will be totaly hidden.
we wont be doing any more work till next sunday afternoon ,but hope to get all the mdf on the front wall finished ,so it can then be filled/sanded/primed/painted :-)
The rear of the wall is mostly finished, just need a few more hours and then the mdf can go on the rear wall once the front is totaly finished and all cables are sorted.

Re: wall and floating wall project for home cinema setup :-)

ok managed to get all the front mdf screwed on and all the screw heads and joints filled ;-)
So just need to sand it all down, and also need to square up the areas around the shelves as we cut them a little too big so they are not flush with the shelf sides.
Also need to attach the rope light mounting strips around the back of the tv as the rope light is just chucked behind the tv to give the lighting effect.
so i am now ready to sand down everything and then prime the mdf then a couple of coats of white paint, then get the projector screen up and box that in,its all coming together as planned :-)
hope you guys like the nearly finished look
