Vermiculite to fill a chimney???

Hi, I'm STILL putting together the final plans for my soundproofing and now need some advice on what to do with this chimney in the attached pic. I'm planning on the usual stud walling for the alcoves. I'm leaving the brick fireplace exposed but will be fitting a stud, rockwool and plasterboard wall in the opening part. So I'm thinking of somehow blocking up the flue from where it begins at the top of the fireplace opening up to where it above the ceiling height of the livingroom. The loft is directly above the living room and the rest of the chimney which leads up to the roof will have plenty of ventilation into the loft.

So the question is whats the best way to block/soundproof the flue? I've heard people suggest vermiculite, should I just chuck a load of this stuff down it?

Cheers.

You might simply consider inserting an amount of lightweight thermal insulation such as fiberglass or mineral wool. You have already sealed off the face, so you simply want to tame air cavity resonance.

Yeh might do that, although Vermiculite seems to be cheap as chips on fleabay so I'll see ;-)

Cheers!
