Well I am about to embark on altering our fireplace to mount our 50" plasma above it, has anyone seen any good pics of ones that have been modified here?
I'm talking about real coal fires not gas boxes, we have an existing coal fire we are going to reduce in size, so we can fit it as low as possible. it has a quite large slate mantle peice so projects most heat outwards and we only ever light it at Christmas , so it should be ok, even so a first lighting we shall make sure the TV is off and we check temperatures before switching on.

just trying to work out the design, any suggestions I'd really appreciate it.

One thing to check is how far infront of the TV the fire will be, coal bits fly off and go everywhere! I think you want the fire to be at least 150mm infront of the face of the TV.

yea cool thanks I should be able to get the fire quite low, and have been looking at an inset stove, using this with a flue in the chimney should stop too much heat around the back of the TV and the stove project even further heat into the room.

Is the tv being mounted onto the chimney breast, or is there a tubular flue?

well both really, it's an existing chimney so the stove will will have to have a flue, but I presume that will help the chimney breast not get as hot if it was an open fire anyhow. but yes if I get oen of the low to the ground stoves I can mount the plasma on the chimney breast quite low but still have a real fire.

well thats the plan trouble is those stoves are really expensive

Thanks thats perfect just what I was looking for, yes with the TV set back in the wall it looks safer from rising heat, nice job doing the whole wall , our chimeny sticks out into the room so I can't do it flat like yours, or have you borded over the alcoves?

I think we shall go for an inset fire so we can get it really low.

My chimeny breast was built into the wall so i didn't need to build it out, just built the studding out to the depth of the TV. Glad you like it, i should get my ass into gear and get it finished but I've been so busy recently...
