Garage conversion and keeping door

Hi all,

Due to some help from you all I have decided to keep part of my garage for my bike and turn the remaining space into a games/music room to keep the neighbours happy.

Question is around keeping the garage door and effectively building a room without a window, what can and can't I do?

Re: Garage conversion and keeping door

You can make the "garage" area smaller by using an electric roller shutter, that way you don't need to allow room for the door to swing open. You can get them fairly cheap these days and fit yourself if you're fairly handy at DIY.. they aren't too hard to fit.

Not sure on the windows front though. Do you /need/ windows? Could do some form of ventilation rather than windows ? least you know you wont have light issues for a cinema...

Have you thought of having a sun pipe? Monodraught Ltd - Domestic SunPipe

No windows needed cause the light would come from your garage roof. Unless uve got rooms over your garage then this wont work lol

You'll find the door won't hold back much sound for one thing. Poorly sealed and not much mass.

If the sound escaping is an issue, consider building a hwavy, sealed wall in fromt of it. The door won't open but will be there when you sell

Nomadic... I had the same problem. How it was solved, was by building a wall --5 feet in from the garage door the length of the garage. This allowed me a storage area 5 feet by 22... enough for some storage and at the same time providing some soundproofing to the outside. Here are a few pics..
