How do i hang a 25KG mirror on the wall?

Hi guys,

As the title suggests, i have bought a large heavy mirror and and looking to hang it in my cinema room also known as the living room

The wall i hope to hang it on is solid and not plasterboard so can i get away with heavy duty hooks or do i need some sort of specialist fixings?

The back of the mirror has two indentations or holes for the hooks i.e. there is no wire or loops on the back presumably because its too heavy for those.

Cheers

Is it all glass or does it have a frame or backing?

Its all glass, on the back there is some sort of backing there is two "holes" for hanging it up just not sure if i need something similar to how a LCD/Plasma is hung, maybe bolts or something as picture hooks would not withstand 25KG

Are they little keyhole shapes ?. If so I have, in the past, just used two longish screws and some very careful measuring and hung them on that.

Yes they are exactly that - keyhole shape, are you sure just a couple of screws can hold that weight? With normal wall plugs?

Re: How do i hang a 25KG mirror on the wall?

Use brown plugs and No10 x 70mm screws and you should be fine. If you're worried you can buy some resin fixings but personally I think they're not needed.

Re: How do i hang a 25KG mirror on the wall?

If they are keyhole shaped they are for screws. You just need to find what size screws will fit in the holes, try 3 inch tens or twelves.

Re: How do i hang a 25KG mirror on the wall?

Yeah just to reitterate what has just been said, two screws will be fine. Just make sure they are not tiny little things. Oh and you have a very accurate tape measure as I for one have not been able to work out a more "scientific" method of mounting in this way than just to go for it.

When you say its a solid wall is it breeze block or brick ?.

Its the wall which seperates my house from my neighbour, would that mean its brick?

Does it make a difference?

Re: How do i hang a 25KG mirror on the wall?

Well just from reading the threads about tvs etc going onto breezeblocks vs bricks. People have mentioned hanging anything heavy onto breezeblocks can be a little problematic as they tend to crumble a litte. How old is your house ??

Re: How do i hang a 25KG mirror on the wall?

Breeze blocks are totally rubbish for fixing. These aren't to be confused with the much stronger fire blocks which are tougher than brick.

If they are indeed breeze blocks then you need to use a resin anchor for each fixing.

breeze are great for fixing unlike airated concrete blocks. Im a joiner and fix things to many different backrounds and breeze is 1 of the good 1s to fix to

Fair enough , if its not brick its looks thesame to me I must admit. Just try and identify what your wall is made off and you should be fine.

Well I personally don't think so. You can dig a hole into breeze with nothing but a screwdriver; they aren't dense enough for even weight distribution.

How would i find out what the wall is made of without drilling a hole into it? I would have thought it was brick as its one of the main walls in the house.

Here is a pic of the 'keyhole' on the back of the mirror i noticed this morning its not a very deep hole - maybe 10mm

you have to drill to fix into it so drill a hole where you need 1. Dark grey dust will be breeze light grey will be thermalite and really easy to drill or orange will be brick. How old is the property?

It was built around 1970

Should i try using masonry anchor sleeve they seem to look like a steel version of a plug ?

Re: How do i hang a 25KG mirror on the wall?

The keyhole things look fine. As has been said , mark up where you want it and drill a hole , whatever the wall is made out of there will be a fixing to suit therefore you are doing no harm. Being from the 70's I wouldn't know what its normal to use. Our house is from the 30's and is double skin brick. But it should be pretty obvious when you drill.

no use a normal brown plug and screw 2" 10 should be more than sufficent to hold a mirror

It's not that much more scientific, but what I do is take a sheet of paper, position it so it covers all the holes in whatever I need to hang then jab a pencil through the paper into the holes.

Then, simply hold this template up to the wall and mark through the holes with a pencil before drilling.

Simple and you know you have the holes in exactly the right place

Re: How do i hang a 25KG mirror on the wall?

what about double sided tape? for really difficult jobs try blu-tack
great advice about identifying walls by the colour of the dust - must remember that as i'm no DIY expert and can often get confused what i'm drilling into!

Re: How do i hang a 25KG mirror on the wall?

Just like to say thanks for everyone's help on here

I have got the the mirror up using masonry drill bit, standard plugs and 8mm screws with length of 60mm, which i bought from Homebase, they were black & decker i think and had clear marking on the packaging what the max load was (80Kg).

Oh and once i drilled through the plaster there was red dust which is presumably brick

Pic below - lets just hope it stays up!!

Nice , Red means brick I reckon. You could prob hold a baby elephant off those now - well a 160Kg one anyway-. Looks good
