New Ceiling and Downlighters

I have a room in my renovation with an awful ceiling and I wanted to know if I stud it out and board over, what is the minimum thickness of stud I can use so I can use down lighting.

The Ceiling is 9ft so I was trying to keep the stud to 75mm. Are there any down lighters (transformer type or mains) that I can fit into this tiny space.

I want about 6 lights in total, what do you recommend.

75mm will be fine mate, the transformers are designed to fit through the hole you make for the down lighter and with 75mm of void you will be fine.

You need to maintain a 50mm gap behind the fitting, a fire rated downlight is approximately 70mm deep, which means a studding depth of 120mm.

Go to an electrical wholesaler to buy your fittings, and ask for fire rated mains downlights - they'll steer you right. Expect as a DIYer to be ripped off to the tune of £10/light - trade will pay around £4/light so if you have a mate who has an account get him/her to buy them.
