CCTV requirement - some help required

Hello all.



Have recently experienced a break in and no one in the area remotely acted upon the alarm bells. Maybe because our area is soooooooo quite and during the period it took place most of the neighbour hood may have at work and what have ya.

Lucky for my sake and family sake they did not clear out the house. Just a lot of damage to the belongings. Very odd they did not take anything or very little in that matter.

I am in the process updgraded the alarm system – one that does not cost very much – but in fact sends a text when a movement is detected.

On the other hand I also thought it would be a good idea to install some cctv external and internal as I have two spare IR CCTV cams which I could possible unitilize in the set up-

Below is a list of what I have and what I have learnt that will be required to build my own cctv operation; learnt from a few threads from here and other internet locations!

• PCi DVR Card

-The DVR means you can record without PC being onThe DVR means you can record without PC being on
-Can be utilized with current computer set up and also allow monitoring offsite over the web?

• I already have 2 spare ; external Cams ( AVC – 667L /colour & IR ) ; from my business premises that wernt being used so I want to use these.

• Possibly 2 internal Wireless Cam – preferably with POE’s

• 1 external PIR floodlight to give light.

• Software (Opensource ? that would allow live monitoring from a diff location)

• BNC cables – Still need to measure the lengths that will be required ?

My main question is what component would be best suited and how the connections would be made between the computer and the CCTV ( be it wired or wireless) as I plan to run both. Also to record footage when ever there is movement or is that with software?

I plan to use some sort of open source software maybe like Zone minder.

One more question – the CCTV cameras that I have (AVC – 667L /colour & IR) have BNC connection and also another type of connection coming of it that I’m not aware of what it is!

So overall my question is what would the recommend DVR card be ? including other components such as wireless cctv ( their connections and further components to feed video so I can record.)

HI sorry to hear about your break in, I am not aware of PCi Card that can do anything without PC being on....... Standalone DVRs can do this with playback over network...

I always think saving CCTV to a PC is pointless as it will probably be nicked with other stuff. A hidden standalone DVR is better or for IP cams an NVR.

a DVR or NVR with correct features and set up can allow for remote montioring over the net if required, IP cams often come with this software.

I'm in the process of installing CCTV cameras/recorders too .Just had a load of box section stolen from my yard by the local scrap dealers .Neighbors have been pestered for a while by some dealers wanting to know what was happening to the steel in the shared yard . So, they left it for a few months , then helped themselves .No one saw anything , so there's no proof .
So, I thought about some cameras to watch the premises .I already had a load of cameras [CMOS ] and I'm buying some CCD ones and have bought 2 SD card recorders with motion sensing .I've also purchased a couple a LED lamps , they seem quite good but seem to be spot beams as aposed to wide angle .The first CCD is a Sony board with 420TVL and seems very good in low light , just have to mount it in a case and do some testing .
I think this is going to be big business ..........CCTV.......... with all the robberys going arround , they tell me it's to do with the "Credit Crunch".
