newbie: mebedded web server control

Hi All,
Thinking of dipping my toe in the HA water - what I want is the ability to switch stuff via a web browser over the internet - but I want to do this with an embedded web server rather than leaving a PC on 24x7. I've seen X10->USB devices, but does anyone do a router-like box with ethernet that'll work?

Any tips? I'm completely comfortable with the ethernet networking side, but know little about HA. Bonus points for being cheap to start small, so I can mess with it without spending serious money.
