Strange goings on .. light switches off then on

Hmmm.. should i be calling ghostbusters?
My office has a number of power points. It has one light in the ceiling which recently blew... nothing untoward about that. I checked the bulb and noted it was a mere 25w bulb on 240v. That explained why the study was so dark.. I therefore put in a stronger bulb which i think is 60w. The light stays on then randomly goes off for around 3 seconds. It comes back on and randomly a couple of hours later will switch off for 5 mins and come back on itself.

My concern is that i wish to put some gu10s into the ceiling in due course. I'm concerned as to why its struggling to handle 25 watts. I bought this place last summer. I note that there are 5 power points in the office and there is a fused spur from where i can switch off the power. The lights run off a seperate circuit though?

First please dont be offended but reading your post it is pretty obvious that you have a very very limited knowledge of house wiring and I would not want to offer you any advice other than get an electrician.

I hear what u say and i sound like a noob. You'll be surprised but i've installed 2 banks of gu10s in my lounge + added to fused spurs for power for my screen, plasma and projector so on a scale of 1-10 i'd say i'm just above 5. If you're an electrician there should be a straightforward response to this? Prefer an answer as opposed to cheek. When i use a lesser wattage bulb no probs. Wanted some general advice. Anyone else?

As I said before I DO NOT want to offend anyone.

It is extremely easy to wire things up and get them to work.

There are 6 things you should consider
1)Safety
2)Regulations
3)Part P (Although you probably dont know what that is.)
4)Safety
5)Safety and
6)Safety
The times I have heard "well its worked ok up until now "whilst I am pulling out the burnt out wiring.

I will give you a straight forward response,its likely your wiring is shot and you have no idea what you are doing.

My advice was given with the best of intentions

If I were you i would cut out the middle man and call the fire brigade right now............hows that for cheek!

Is there just the one light on that circuit? Does anything else turn on/off at the same time?

Is it controlled by a dimmer?

You might want to try switching off circuits at your switchboard, and see if the sockets are on the same circuit as the light (nasty wiring). Try to isolate what else goes off when you switch off the circuit that controls the light.

Id does sound like dodgy wiring though.

I've got an uncle whose an electrician and will ask for advice. I've noted actually that now that i've put a 25w bulb in place it doesnt go off at all. Works perfectly fine. Will have it looked into. Very odd.
