I had a new house built and had it wired for multi room sound (8 rooms) and tv, telephone and t'internet to every room. On paper this seemed ideal. What I wish I'd done is put in about 4 times as much cat5 cable (to every possible point where you might need it in the future eg light switches), put in electrical cable to every conceivable place (eg to operate blinds and curtains) and finally more tv/internet points in the rooms as you can never really tell how you will use that room until you move in. Basically, think what you need and then quadruple it!
I also regret not putting in a high def capable video / tv distribution system. Again, put in the wiring and add in the hardware later.
The best thing I installed was a media cupboard to put all the hardware in - its nice to have it all hidden away.
Best of luck.
