We have gates that control access to our street which operate via a small key fob, which I assume is via RF.

The company that supplies the fob charges £35 for a replacement which sounds a bit expensive to me. I was wondering if its possible to buy these keys fobs that I could use to self learn from the one I already have to keep as a spare?

Can anyone recommend me where to look?

Maplin have these, but it seems to imply they only work with their own receiver module.

£35 is cheap i have known them be £60+ trade! They are also normally manufacturer specific.

Not as simple as picking up a cheap fob that can learn the current rf signal then as I hoped!

That is the last thing you want if you don't want somebody to clone it. As Horny said £35 is excellent as if you have a good brand gate system, the code will change every time the key is used. Think of it as an electronic key rather than a remote control.

Having said all that some gate controllers have an auxiliary switch input onto the board for push buttons, key switches etc. I you could use a piggy back receiver to operate that if you have one but it would still cost as much even if it was an x 10 system.

And tampering with the control mechanism of a communal gate system would get you in whole world of pain, and potentially legal bother.

Even the most sophisticated gate system can be opened by rewiring the the control board (i have had to do it).

Hi Jay, depending on the make of the gate system fitted, Came, Nice, BFT and Faac all use both the fixed code and rolling code transmitters typically on the 433mhz freq, if you open the back up of your remote and see a row of dip switches you know it is of the fixed code variety and will be easy to copy if you get the same type. there are companies now that sell very cheap cloning remotes, these will only work on fixed code tx's.

I wouldnt begin to tinker with the control panel if i was in your shoes. £35 is quite respectable, i have worked for various gate automation companies who charge anything from £32 each to £45 for the henderson lipstick type remotes.
