home security - WebCam monitor - IP cameras

anyone any experience with home surveillance systems?

Been looking at this home security software: Motion Detection Software - Video Monitoring: WebCam Monitor

Looks pretty good as long as it's used with suitable hardware. I'd need an IP camera but have no experience with these so was hoping for suggestions. They have a link on the above page to a very expensive one (which is in the US anyway). There are also a list of compatible options at Selecting a Security Camera

Any advice much apreciated.

Cheers

Home security.

I want at least one camera outside so it should be weatherproof. Although I could build a small perspex box and locate it under a soffit board so that it's not expose to the weather I suppose?

Thanks

IF you buy a panasoinc IP cam it comes witht he software to do what you want if you want more then one cam you have to pay for the software, cheaper to buy a dedicated DVR and a couple of decent analogue cams. If you want to be able to use footage as evidence you need to speak to local police about frame rates and time stamps etc they will require.

That's helpful thanks. One of the reasons for using an IP camera is to enable motion detector activation. I also believe streaming is possible with this setup. I've had some odd occurences involving people photographing my house, garage and vehicles so want to know if/when people approach my property. Email alerts would be useful for this as I have access to the estate managers security so if I see something happening I can have a large man there in minutes. He can then hold down the toerag until I get there with a blowtorch and pliers and go medievil on his a55. I have no time for thieves.

Re: home security - WebCam monitor - IP cameras

Very strange - I quoted another response from someone and when I saved the comment had gone and no it isn't there at all. Anyhoo this was my response to a suggestion for the Panasonic CL140 :

That's great, thanks.

My last reply was made before I saw your response. hence it seeming like I repeat exactly what you advised!

I've heard of the CL140. Did a lot of research last night and came up with the Y-cam white (daytime only) and Y-Cam black (IR for night time). They do an outdoor housing and looking at video clips the picture is pretty good. I'll do a bit more research on the panasonic but do you have any experience with the y-cam?

Cheers

Re: home security - WebCam monitor - IP cameras

Modern DVR systems for CCTV offer full motion detection and triggering of the recorder and some also couple this with email alerts and even streaming to your mobile.

I am just about to set one up in MK with all of these capabilities so will let you know how it goes.

I look forward to the post in the camera forum of a member that was pinned down whilst taking pictures with their new camera. Would be an ironic circle of life type thing.

LOL.

Although why would they have been hanging out the passenger window of a moving car whilst testing their camera? and then speed off when I approach them? I can think of no logical explanation other than criminal activity. Indeed I know a man who knows a man who confirms that thieves do this when they're stealing to order. I had two pretty motorbikes on the drive at the time. luckily we ride them to work so if they break into the garage all they'll get is my punchbag!
