i know ZERO about home automation but am keen to get going.

my harmony one should arrive tomorrow and i understand it can operate lights too.

do i simply need an x10 controller like this...
http://www.uk-automation.co.uk/mc10-...er-p-1160.html

and a wall switch?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-X10-Home-A...3286.m20.l1116

John,

Is the wall switch single or double? One of those switches is ideal but ensure that is the light one and not the appliance one as the light one allows dimming and soft-on/soft-off. I have ordered from Kevin_Lo and have had a good service but get him to write 'gift' on the customs sheet as I was stung!!

The lights switches are really good and are marketed by Kevin_Lo as X10v2 but other UK sellers do them as Domia switches (www.simplyautomate.com) I use these in my house, they have a soft-on/soft-off feature and can remember the last dim level. Also they can still be used as a normal switch.

If you want to control the light from the Harmony One via infrared then the controller you should get is http://www.uk-automation.co.uk/infra...43-p-1164.html which allows ir signals to be received which then are outputted as X10 along the powerline.

When setting up your Harmony you must ensure that the other devices are set to do nothing so that when you switch the lights on the tv etc doesn't turn off. If you have problems with this then Logitech will be able to fiddle with your settings.

Regards

Duncs

Re: Basic automation starter kit....

I have a lot of X10 gears (some Kevin Lo, some Marmitek).
But if I could start again, I wouldn't bother.
I would just go for the B&Q HomeEasy range, and I would have been much happier.
