Hi guys,

I'm really seeking help/advice regarding my TV-unit (i will have to post some photo's for you of my home cinema, so sit tight and i'll add a link here sometime soon)

Basically, i have a TV-unit from Ikea (Tobo TV bench unit - http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20117674)

I have my PS3 stood-up behind the glass shelf (the glass shelf is never closed when the ps3 is in-use), however the unit gets pretty hot inside when it is one, despite the glass sliding-shelf being open. I also find because the unit has 2 cable holes (top and bottom) the hdmi cable must be fed through at the top to reach the back of the TV, by this the ps3 fan seems to release it's hot air directly onto the hdmi cable! .. my 1st question is Will this make any impact to the quality of the image? and any damage to the cable itself?....

The idea i have come up with is to buy a ps3 cooling fan! but..not attatch it to the ps3 but to buy a usb uk mains adapter, which has 2 usb inputs so i can run a fan from behind the ps3 inside the unit?

would this be a good solution or is there a far easier one?

Hi are you suffering any issues as it is setup now? Also have you measured the temp either ambient in the cupboard or hotest parts of the unit it's self. If you can feedback this would help. You may not need to do anything with your current setup.

Hi, thanks for the reply. As of this moment i can't say as though i am experiencing any problems. I noticed when i played 'Uncharted:Drake's Fortune' on ps3 i have sort of refresh lines appear on the screen (very hard to explain other than kind of the interferance lines) but having tried other games (burnout paradise, resistance:fall of man) i dont have this problem so am guessing is just apart of that games graphics.

I havent taken a temp reading however that probably is a good idea and should try and do that. I will try and get one asap and let you know, thanks.

I'm still thinking a cooling fan would be a suitible idea, as having just tested it last night after a good 2hr gaming session it is pretty hot just from the feel of things inside the unit...


Here is my current idea;

I know the usb could be powered by the ps3 but i dont want that, i'd rather have a sperate control for it as the fan has an on/off switch.

Ive looked over afew other posts about members using a PC-assisted fans (ide-powered/mains box) and attatching it to the inside of the unit but seems very costly and tricky!.. + im not sure i have the room for it in the unit what with controllers and leads and wiring etc... if anyone knows any other idea's for how this problem may be solved please let me know....... thanks!

I dont know what the cost of the add on Ps3 fan is but I think you would be beter off going to a good electronics outlet, maybe Maplins or similar and taking a look at there cooling fans, you should be able to pick up a high output low voltage fan that you could attatch this to a small mains adaptor. you should be able to put this all together for around £15 and it will probabally have a better airflow ie- greater cooling abillity than a dedicated PS3 Fan.
Its ironic really when you think about it but the Ps3 is getting hot, so you attach a coling fan, but wait this is plugged into the ps3 usb port, and inturn is pulling more power from the PS3 the result being that the PS3 gets even hotter. Catch 22 anyone.

Thanks and yes you are right about the ps3 usb powered cooling fan. Ive tried looking on maplin, however, can only seem to find pc fans and not direct mains connection fans. Trouble is if i use one simular to a pc fan with a mains voltage box im going to end up with power leads and live wires everywhere. I'm after really an external fan but cant seem to find anything suitible...

Although have now just come across these (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1810) i guess i just need a plug to wire them up together? and some wire to reach the socket? Shame there isnt a more commercial/retail version of these avaliable?
