ropelights from a fused spur

I've also posted this in diy forum, thought I might get a better answer here.

Two questions: Can I run two sets of ropelights from one fused spur? Total length of both will be about 26 metres in total?

Its the stuff from tlc (duralight) and says 16 watts per metre. I am right in thinking this will draw about 4 amps?

Can I wire the flex from the mains cable directly into the dimmer switch or I do I need to replace this with twin and earth fixed cabling as its going to be in a plasterboarded void?

Sorry, three questions?! What size cable to run from socket to spur and then spur to dimmer? I have 2.5mm2 twin and earth so will probably use this.

Re: ropelights from a fused spur

26*16W = 416W

Or 416/240 = 1.73 amps

You could run that on 1mm lamp wire, unless the rules have changed.

It's not a problem, IMO, but I'm not a qualified spark mate.

No doubt someone will answer you with 100% facts

Re: ropelights from a fused spur

If you need to ask the question, you shouldn't be doing it. Isn't sub-circuit cabling covered by Part-P regs now?

Any house fires will now be carefully looked at by insurance companies. if they find evidence of incorrect work, they won't pay. even if it's nothing to do with the real cause. that fact alone is worth considering.

Re: ropelights from a fused spur

That's probably right, unfortunately.

Part P though is laughable, IMO.

I've been making, testing and commisioning commercial gas pipes as big as 12" diameter for nearly 30 years, but now, I can't legally turn the gas on

Typical of the H&S world we currently live in, having gone totally mad, IMO.

But a good point, nonetheless

Re: ropelights from a fused spur

Thanks for your help. I thought it was a no-no but thought I'd ask. I'm going to use a dimmable socket instead and hide the flex in some trunking, plugging it straight into a mains socket. Safer all round only the ones I've found are rated to 300 watts so will have to split into two.

Re: ropelights from a fused spur

Its perfectly legal to run lights from a spur, even in a "special area" as long as the regulations are followed. As long as the fittings are suitable and correctly installed it is fine.
