How do you get lights behind a TV?

Hi I am a complete novice at this so any help is much appreciated.

I have looking at peoples rooms and kit setups and there are some which have TV’s and shelves which have low coloured lighting coming from underneath them or behind them.

I like the look of these and was wondering how it was achieved?
Are they plugged in or connected to the mains? For a simple setup with a couple of colours do you just buy the lights and plug them in or is there more to it than that? And could some one point me to a cheep website where I can get them from and what kit would I need for this.

Thanks for all your help.

I have used a brand called iceled in my house. It is a 12v high output multicolour led product. If you go to Argos/maplins you can buy a 12v power supply for £5ish. I also used something called flexitape, it is a strip of leds in a thin waterproof jacket. It can be cut to length and uses little power. I have just bought some rgb led bars from him but they are not as light as the led tape for sticking to the back of the tv.

I have a very experienced customer in sheffield who specialise in led lighting for cars called Source Sounds ( 01142571550). Speak to Lee or Paul they will look after you. They are top blokes. Tell them Pete from Celsus gave you there number.

One thing i forgot to mention, be careful sticking heavy led bars to the back of your tv as they will generally fall off when the tv gets warm. I learnt that long ago.
