MR11 LED straight halogen replacement?

I have some MR11 downlighters that are used primarily for accent lighting.
One of the bulbs has just gone.
As they are at the at the top of a galleried landing they are not easily accessible (need to get the ladders outs), and I would like to leave them on all evening.

So thinking of putting some LEDs in.

However, googling them I noticed some say "12v battery only not mains" or "requires LED transformer/driver".

Are there any that are a straightforward replacement for regular 12v halogens driven by the transformer that would have been supplied with them when fitted?

Re: MR11 LED straight halogen replacement?

You can get direct replacement LED arrary that will fit in place of either a GU10 type lamp or one of those low voltage lamps with the two prongs sticking out the back.

May be worth a phone call to somewhere like CEF or Edmundsons electrical (or any other electrical wholesaler)

I think this is what your looking for. I would order a one to test first as they give a very different light to a halogen bulb.

Actually I have already ordered 3 of those.

However, despite getting reassurance from them that they were direct replacements, I in fact did end up needing to replace the existing transformer.

With the existing transformer, when you switched them on they flashed briefly and went out - presumably because they were not drawing enough power and the electronic transformer thought there was no load.

I replaced the transformer with one supplied by them, and they work fine. However, that added another £7 to the cost.... so not really a cost saving exercise...

On a positive note, they are very good. I used the traditional warm white so they blend in with other lights, and though not as bright as the 20w halogens they replaced they are bright enough - and cheap enough and long lasting that I can leave them on all evening, which is what I wanted.
