Plasma hidden lighting?

I'm a week away from getting a new Pioneer 50" plasma Have to admit I'm barely managing to contain myself, although I've still got a week before it arrives. I'd like to have the rest of my setup ready, so I've put together a new AV cabinet plus fitted a Vogel wall mount and column system.

To finish it all off I thought it'd be nice to have some lighting for the rear of the screen. Vogel's XLF300 looks ideal;

As I'm new to all this lighting stuff I wanted to see if anyone else here had recommendations for alternatives - hopefully cheaper ones!

I have a HTPC under the plasma, so I could go the DIY cold cathode route, although I'm not sure how I'd control dimming.

Re: Plasma hidden lighting?

Check out the lighting section of Ikea mate, they have some decent cheap LED lighting. Ive got one of there old versions which only did single colours, the new ones can do multiple colours or even cycle through. Heres a pic of how my blue ones looked:

Afraid I cant remember what the name of the one I had was, but this is the new version which is more expensive unfortunately:

Hope this helps mate

Re: Plasma hidden lighting?

That looks good thanks.

Is it 25cm per piece or in total in a line?

25cms each approx. They can clip into each other to make longer runs.

Re: Plasma hidden lighting?

The Ikea ones are called Dioders, you can either get just white ones, or multi coloured ones, which you can have on a solid colour, flicking between colours or fading between colours. For a 50" screen you will need 3 packs to go round the whole screen. I've used 2 packs on mine as I've only lit the top and two sides. Cost £40ish per pack

You could take a look at the new full Colour LED Tape on our website. It is very similar to that used in the latest Ambilight systems.

It is capable of displaying over 2 million colours can be supplied in various lengths and can be cut. A very versatile product and perfect for backlighting.

Litewave

The LED tape looks excellent - but does look a bit bright. Have you any photos of an install behind a plasma so I can compare to ambilight brightness ?

Cheers
Martin.
