I am about to invest in soem custom made furniture. Part of the design includes display cupbaords that will have down lights.

Which is more preferable/controllable?

I would like the lights to be remote control able and on/off/dimmer if possible.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

What sort of lighting will be fitted into the display cabinets?

The final design has not yet been made, up to a point Ican chose my own types and let them drill the holes, even fit them hopefully.

The plan is to be in the top on the unit looking down onto glass shelves...

but Iwant to be able t control them via remote if posible so i can switch them ooff whenwatching films etc as they will be either side of the plasma

If its on a budget, then something simple like THIS will do the job.
There are restrictions with this kit, ie. 60-300w incandescent and 12v low voltage only.

X10 is pretty much introductory level, and fairly simple to work with.
If budget it not so much of an option, then there are other alternatives.
If this is going to be the only automated lighting you will have, then X10 will do fine.
If you are planning on getting more into it, there are lots of systems you could install that are more versatile.

One thing to remember with the X10 kit. That unit should be wall mounted, so you will
need to be able to hide it local to the displays. You will also need one of THESE.
The transceiver accepts your remote signal, and sends the appropriate X10 signal
onto your mains wiring.
You will also need a remote. Something like THIS will do fine.

What if it is 240 volt lights they supply?

Or can anyone recomend appropaite down fill lights that would work on the X10 system?

THIS is simple to install mate. Goes where your switch should be.
It will handle mains halogen up to the rated power. Available in various finishes.
