Advice req'ed: Warehouse conversion on a budget

Hi - looking for some advice on an exciting project to convert a warehouse into a luxury appartment.

The place is a shell and I'm looking at kitting it out on a *budget*.

So there you have it ... if it was your bachelor pad what would you put in there and how should you wire it up (I know wireless has moved on a great deal - still need to hardwire?)

Would you use Homeseer software?

Again this isn't a budget unlimited project but I would like to wire up for the future even if I am not able to buy all the toys to start with.

I had a new house built and had it wired for multi room sound (8 rooms) and tv, telephone and t'internet to every room. On paper this seemed ideal. What I wish I'd done is put in about 4 times as much cat5 cable (to every possible point where you might need it in the future eg light switches), put in electrical cable to every conceivable place (eg to operate blinds and curtains) and finally more tv/internet points in the rooms as you can never really tell how you will use that room until you move in. Basically, think what you need and then quadruple it!
I also regret not putting in a high def capable video / tv distribution system. Again, put in the wiring and add in the hardware later.
The best thing I installed was a media cupboard to put all the hardware in - its nice to have it all hidden away.

Best of luck.

In the new world of wireless with DECT phones and Wireless internet - Is there still the need to put in cable for phone and internet?

Yes! - I've allocated a nice big cupboard. I'll find somewhere else for the ironing board

I prefer the wired system for both – it’s far more robust and I do have DECT and internet wireless blackspots in the house where the wireless does not cover. You will probably be ok with just wireless in the apartment though. The wiring is very cheap and I would put that in anyway – just in case.

For video distribution I would talk to an expert – Joe Fernand at The Media Factory will b able to advise you on various switching and distribution systems.
