Total novice needs help with light wiring

I'm trying to replace the light in my kitchen but the wiring has thrown me.

The wires coming out of the ceiling are - 2 live, 2 neutral and one earth. The wires on the light are - 1 live, 1 neutral and one earth.

After some experimentation I found out that current is only going through one of the red wires so is this some kind of 2 loop circuit?

I was told by someone I only needed to use 3 of the 4 live and neutral wires coming out of the ceiling but they weren't too sure.

Thanks!

Hello mate.

First off, the legal bit.
A kitchen is classed as a "Special Location" within Part P
of the Building Regs, therefore the work you are doing should
be carried out by an Approved Contractor.

"The one with the current coming out" is the live loop in.
Connect the neutral of this cable to the neutral on the
light fitting.
The 2 lives need to be connected together in a separate
piece of connector. This drops the live down to the switch.
The neutral that is left, is now the switched live.
This should have a piece of Red(or Brown) sleeving slid
over it to indicate a live conductor.
This needs connecting to the live on the light fitting.
So in effect you will have 2 blacks or blues going to the
live and neutral on the light fitting.

Johnny.

Hi Johnny,

Thanks for your response, I really appreciate the help.

When you say - "The 2 lives need to be connected together in a separate piece of connector" - Does that just mean connect them to each other but not to the light?
