Angry Cold Cathode Lighting Problem

I've invested in a Cold Cathode set from Maplin to try out some lighting ideas in my home cinema. I connected the set to a 12V 400mA adaptor, also sourced from Maplin but after a few hours use, the adaptor seems to have burn't out. Can anybody suggest what I may have done wrong? I used a 2 core connector to connect the adaptor to the set. Could this be the problem?
Any help would be appreciated.
