small project, need advice with leds etc

today i bought a curtain pole and two glass globe ends.
the diameter of the pole is 35mm.
i though i would like to put a small white or green led inside each globe.
ive never done anything like this so im really looking for advice.
firstly i notice leds are either 5v or 12v. do they come in any other voltages?
if i run three AA batteries that comes to 4.5v. im assuming that the led will still light up, will it? or does it need 5v to switch it on?
how long will a 5v led run off of three AA batteries?
if its a month or so thats cool, if its a lot shorter ill need to fit a switch.
i could fit a small switch onto the pole or daggling just behind the curtain.
ideally i would like some kind of remote control switch, something the size of a key fob.
does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?
im not sure where i can buy all the stuff i want or even if it can be done.
cheers guys
