Ok, so my dyson is on its last legs and i am being bullied (by the Mrs) into buying another. It seems she has fallen for asthetics rather than functionality (Its just a ****ing hoover!)..
Just wondered whether anyone here has had a Henry and could comment on how they compare on Wood / Laminate / Carpets etc..

I hear many good things about the Henry (best being they last forever )..It also seems that there is an offer where you could bag one for £75 from Homebase..

dysons, work damn well especially the ones with balls, cost a fortune and because they sux up so much need emptying constantly

I used to have a Henry and threw it away because I 'upgraded' to a new Dyson. Bad move... the Henry was so much better in cleaning.
Cant comment how it is on hard floors since only had carpet back then.

And how hard is it to change a bag anyway !

Really - i was under the impression that the suction was as good as the dyson's....

I was tempted to make some smutty remarks about Henry and Dysons abilities, but I won't

The only thing I would say is that Dysons are not as good quality as the marketing would have you believe.

Our Dyson had bits that fell apart early on and the motor died after about 2 years. The bagless operation in handy but there are others manufacturers.

Henry's seem very robust, but I am not keen on those types that you drag around, I prefer an upright vacuum cleaner.

Can you still by Hoovers? I recall seeing a documentary on TV, something along the lines, Dyson went to Hoover and said I have this great bagless idea, they said go away time waster , they were too busy giving away free holidays if any one can recall that mess.

I believe the 5 year warranty that Dyson offer goes some way to aliviate their quality issues..Although i'm sure there are lots of conditions attached!

I've bought Henrys, my Dad uses Henrys.

Suction is good as far as I am concerned, Dad uses his for work - good for industrial and domestic.

Upright Dyson (Mk1V) wins hands down for carpet.

Henry wins for DIY rubbish and picking larger stuff up - but the suction on the henry drops quite quickly if your using a bag, and very quickly if you are just using the filter. However turn it off and give it kick (to release the find dust trapped in the filter / bag) and suction is partially restored.

Suction on the dyson seems to be a lot better - and if you block up the extra holes on the hose tools* actually stronger than the henry in terms of pulling stuff up. You need to wash the motor filter occasionally.

The Dyson work well and will keep on working well once you understand how it works and where stuff can stuck (We have an old Mk 1 dyson on our top floor - suction is good, though it is much more prone to blocking than the later model).

Dyson service we have found to be great - AFAIR is a fixed charge to get it working properly again.

Henry no contest. I used to work for a trade cleaning supplier, we used to shift about 1600 henries' a week. The trade will not touch Dysons with a barge pole ,too expensive too heavy too complicated. the only thing that goes wrong on a Henry is the ring contact in the winding mechanism, 80 pence and 10 mins with a screwdriver to fix. The dont however like water , you need a George for that.

we used to like Sebo as well, those because the control PCB is in the front of the vac head it used to fail regularly being bashed into skirting boards, 82 quid each time they blow..............nice work if you can get it. Trade likes them Light and German quality (Cobblers)..............

I broke the arm on a dyson. Phoned them and they sent a new one no questions asked. It was my fault.
Accidently thrown out a part once too. They sent a new one !

No cost.

Just got an Animal DC23 to replace the vey old model (still going though).

We had a dyson lasted around 3 years and in that time got fixed more then once the quality is rubbish.

We also have a Miele cat and dog brilliant it is and over 10 years old and still going strong never so much as a fault and great and picking up.

Oh yes and we tried to claim on the dyson warranty they tried everything to get out of it total rubbish service never again.

Had a Kirby years ago, big maroon/chrome thing, cost £800 was far too heavy and clumbersome, replaced in 95 with an original DC01 that i still have. Gets pulled to bits every couple of months because it looses suction, always has due to the stupid shape of the inlet tube next to the brushes (won't mention constant filter change as you don't need to anymore) both now must have changed, but it keeps going. Only one person i know has had a more reliable cleaner longer, and it's a Henry.

Ive used boith and would unhesitatingly say Dyson upright .For cylinder Henry is good and durable but doesnt have the same suction

Just wondering something:

At my voluntary workplace, we use a Panasonic upright vacuum, but on Monday it packed up, the motor died smoking, etc.

My question is, could sucking up a carrier bag have caused that to happen?

Another Miele fan. The one I bought has a variable motor speed/suction control. Turn it down, and it still works, but is very quiet.
