Quite possibly the worst thread I have ever started - BUT, I need to ask as I hope someone has recently had to buy one and can save me the hassle of trawling around the shops. Or spending the next month on the internet going through every site that google finds me.

I did have a Dyson DC04 which lasted a good 7 years. Last week it started to make popping and wheezing noises and started smoking, so I knew it was on its way out and was heading for cleaner heaven.

I dont want to spend too much this time but am after something as powerful with a long flexible hose to go all the way upstairs, and I want it to be bagless. I dont have pets but I do have kids so something with really good suction is essential. Upright or cylinder - doesnt matter.

Thats about it really. Hundred quid limit but will go above if someone really recommends one above that.

So, predictable as these threads are, my question is - can anyone please recommend a really good vacuum cleaner with the above attributes. thanks

Apart from the bagless bit I would have said a Henry.

I completely agree. I've got a Henry now, and it's the only vacuum cleaner I'd recommend. Previously I had uprights and they don't compare. The Henry has by far the best suction and the long hose makes it easy for use on the stairs.

Also the bags are cheap and readily available, so I don't think that bagless cleaners have any advantages there.

My on/off switch failed on our Henry after 5 years faithful service.
I phoned the manufacturer and the gentleman at the other end arranged for me to be sent a free replacement switch - that was 6 months ago and no further issues.
I also find that the way it put together is logical making servcing a cinch.
So I too am now a Henry fan.

True, however there are always discount codes floating around for currys/dixons et al.

The cheapest non discounted is around £200 but when you factor in a five year warranty with what IMO is the best vacum around it is a no brainer.

Had a light argument with the daughter in law a couple of weeks ago, tried explaining that Hoover is a manufacturer of vacuum cleaners.

Get the bog standard, no frills, Dyson.

I know it's cool to slag them off but they actually do last a long time.

In my experience a Dyson lasts as long as 3 Hoovers.

I always say go to a janitorial supplier and see what they stock as their products are aimed at the trade .Henrys and sometimes Sebos always available there but NOT Dysons.Says it all to me

If you can stretch your budget a bit more you can get the excellent numatic "George" which is just like a Henry but is also an easy to use carpet shampoo cleaner.

Am I the only one who has a Nilfisk? Got it as a wedding present 11 yrs ago and is still going strong.

My parents have one that is over 40 yrs old, and the only thing that needed replacing in that time was the hose.

Great value for money.

Warned my sister in law away from Dyson but she got one - regretted it ever since. Kept breaking in all sorts of ways.

Personally I use a Siemens (Bosch). Has to deal with much abuse - 3 kids, 3 dogs. Havent had to use the 5 year guarantee that came with it - not that I could now its 6 years old.

That's beacuse they are the number one seller.

And people ditch their old one for the newer funkier model.

When the old one is probably perfectly servicable with a few replacement filters etc.

Hence they find their way back into the market.

Rather than fodder for land-fill.

i read somewhere that dyson now do a service callout for them. it was a fixed charge (60 70 squid) and they would fix anything and everything. dunno if thats still happens tho...

Had 2 Dysons, thought they were both medicore, I believe I paid about £350+ for the first one back in the day, lasted about a year and a bit, wasn;'t massively impressed, overated IMO.

Friend owns a commercial cleaning company said go get a Henry.

Years later, never looked back, reliable, simple, does what it says on the can.

My folks also use the Nilfisk that they got as a wedding present 42 years ago. It's had a few replacement parts but the basic machine is still the same.

It seems there was a time when things were built to last. On a completely different scale the British Rail built High Speed Train is over 30 years old but still preferred by most travellers when compared to more modern options.

got my Sanyo from currys a few years back for £100-best i have ever had. not sure if currys still do the sanyo range, but my brother has just bought an upright bagless (like mine) Vax from them & that looks ok.., again around £100

My experience with Henrys suggests that you'd be better off crawling round on your hands and knees sucking the dirt up through a straw rather than buying one.

Also, as someone who has eczema, owns a cat and had one of the highest scores ever seen for allergy to house dust by the lab at my local hospital, I can safely say that I wouldn't ever have anything other than a Dyson. And we've had ours for 5 years without any problems....

Don't Dyson come out and get your vac working again for the princely sum of £50 ? Might be worth investigating before you spend £100 on a new vac , you were obviously happy with it if you had it 5 years

Smaller/lighter than the DC25, which I have.
Available refurbished for <£150 on ebay.
I've bought several reconditioned Dysons off ebay, no problems at all.

Ive had a dyson animal for over a year now and ive sucked up everying with it from broken up concrete to plaster dust and it still functions as it did when i got it new.
We have a henry at work well the cleaners do and you can hardly pick up a screw with it.
