What make Washing Machine?

Looking for a new washing machine as the current one looks to be packing up (Hotpoint Aquarious).

Had a Zanussi before and that lasted for years and was very good.

Should we go for Zanussi or are there any other good makes out there?

Going to stay away from Hotpoint.

Re: What make Washing Machine?

We went from Bosch to Hotpoint and I'd rate "our" hotpoint over "our" bosch. Have to say that my assumption would be that Bosch would be the better brand but I've found that not to be the case.
Whatever you decide on look around. We got ours £100 less that Comet/Currys etc from Sainsburys online!! Definately worth an evening on the web having a look!

Re: What make Washing Machine?

Miele all the way.

My mothers is over 15 years old, is used most days and has never had an issue. It works as good now as it did when new.

My Miele is 2 years old and still has 8 years warranty left. The thing is practically silent and built like a tank. It's used most days of the week twice a day (2 kids!!).

Before the Miele I was buying a new machine every 2 to 3 years I don't expect to need a new one again.

Always had Hotpoint before because they were about half price from the Hotpoint factory shop before the factory closed down.

Re: What make Washing Machine?

The cheapest Miele i can see is £879.

No way I can afford to pay that kind of money.

My budget is more the £300 mark.

Re: What make Washing Machine?

Didn't dyson make washing machines. I remember years ago they had some kind of twin drum centrifugal technology. God knows what that means. Miele's are great, my friend has one and it's very quiet but then it comes at a price. My 15 year old Hotpoint is still going strong, only had to change the belt twice since I bought it.

Re: What make Washing Machine?

John Lewis own brand are OK. I think they're actually Zanussi but with a 3 year warranty.

Top tip. Whatever you decide on, check the depth measurement. Some are MUCH deeper than others, as I found with the JL after the nice delivery men had taken away the old machine.

Re: What make Washing Machine?

I remember a few years ago when we were getting ours repaired that the engineer told me that there were only two or three companies in the world that manufactured most of the washing machines and that it was badge engineering at it's finest.

Unfortunately I can't remember the details

I don't go with this train of thought.
Whilst long-term reliability is impressive, of course, it also means the owner has an incredibly out-dated machine.
Newer machines will be more efficient, quieter etc.etc.
I'd rather spend less and keep up with advances in efficiency and technology.

We're talking about something that swishes water about in a drum here.

My 12 year old Meile has never been serviced, has served us as a family of 5 (with 3 kids growing up etc) extremely well and is still quieter than all my friends and neighbours washing machines. I fail to see how it's outdated - even the plastic is still white (rather than the faded cream you often see on old appliances).

We're also talking about a budget of £300 so it would be helpful to the OP if people tried to answer the question rather than waving their willies around

Thanks Ian.

As I said, I am looking to spend closer to £300 so as good as Miele are, that puts them out the equation.

Not sure how much they go for but was looking at John Lewis the other day and the cheapest one on there is over £800.

Think I may go with Zanussi as had one before and it lasted a long time without any trouble.

Re: What make Washing Machine?

I realise it's still over budget, and it's more than likely a different model, but just in case you've come into some money, there are cheaper Mieles to be found.

Buy MIELE DISTINCTION 600 | Washing machine - Laundry & Dishwashers | Comet

£649.99 - 15% = £552.49

A little less than the £800 you've seen.

We bought an "ordinary" washing machine 15 years ago and it lasted 10 years to be replaced by a fairly cheap Servis which has served us well for the last five years and (touch wood) is showing no signs of expiring yet.

Re: What make Washing Machine?

Google "comet clearance" and look there. I picked up a silver Bosch washing machine for £240 yesterday which had an in store price of £449 (we went to one last night to have a look at it in the flesh).

The units are often open box / user returns but come with a full warranty (Bosch comes with a two year warranty) and may have the odd mark or dent.

I bought my fridge freezer this way and it was supposed to have a few scratches and all but one wiped off (they musn't use water and clothes at comet).

Worth considering this route if you want to get a better machine at the expense of a few marks.

Oh, and don't buy Beko my machine lasted just over two years and only got used once a week before the drum bearing went. Terrible quality.

I bought a John Lewis brand one 3 years ago that's been fine for me. I bought it mainly for the extended warranty you get with it.

If you're going to be so basic, why renew anything as long as it works?
A 15 year old TV will 'show a picture'
A 15 year old stereo will 'play a tune'.
Fact is, technology marches on and a 15 year old washing machine will not be as efficient or wash as well as a new one.
I would also imagine its styling looks dated too (may not be important to some, but some people have their machines 'on show')

And your evidence for this claim is where ?

Please could you explain to me what a modern washing machine does differently to one of 15 years ago. (Ignoring the Dyson contra rotation one).

Surely the development has been in the development of detergents.

Not sure it actually looks any different to any of the more 'modern' machines. It's in the utility room anyway.

Modern washing machines have faster spin speeds, larger capacity drums, more programs, are more energy efficient, better indication of progress of the cycle, better wash performance.
Some now have a steam function which help freshen clothes, reduce creasing and kills more bacteria.

So while a 15 year old machine may perform just as well as it did 15 years ago (unlikely), it is doubtful that it would perform as a modern machine.

I'll grant you the spin speed (ours tops out at 1100) and the Kg or so on the capacity.

Not sure about the 'more programs' or energy efficiency (ours is A rated with a C rating on Spin).

I'd actually argue it is probably performing better than it did 15 years ago. The machine hasn't changed, but the quality of detergents certainly has.

That's impossible to judge - all I know is the total cost of ownership is probably way lower.

Re: What make Washing Machine?

I'll grant you the spin speed (ours tops out at 1100) and the Kg or so on the capacity.

Not sure about the 'more programs' or energy efficiency (ours is A rated with a C rating on Spin).
Modern machines are now rated up to A++ energy efficiency due to the fact that the tech has moved on, an A rating for spin is possible on machines with a spin of 1600.

I'd actually argue it is probably performing better than it did 15 years ago. The machine hasn't changed, but the quality of detergents certainly has.
While you may be getting better stain removal and cleaner clothes due to the better detergents in your machine, with a newer model you would get better results from less of the same detergents at a lower temperature, using less water and less energy. Surely thats an improvement.

That's impossible to judge - all I know is the total cost of ownership is probably way lower.
I'll agree that going out and spending on a new machine may not be right for you while yours is working to the level you expect and are happy with. Even a 15 year old Miele (the best make, no doubt) will not be as good as a modern Miele (and one reason your machine is as white as the day you bought it, is that Miele never used to make their machines pure white )
