Any recommendations for American style Fridge/Freezer?

Getting the kitchen done, looking for one of those American style fridge freezers with the double doors, in some sort of steel finish.
Boots Kitchen Appliances has some good choices and prices.
Any recommendations?
Fancy-dan touches like ice-cube makers are not essential.
I feel a budget of £700-£900 is ample, so no fancy manufacturers either (smeg/nef/miele)

Re: Any recommendations for American style Fridge/Freezer?

You don't state how you use it/install it....Just so you are aware a couple of point;

1. many that say are stainless steel only have some cladding for the doors, so if you have it freestanding that could be an issue.
2. How do you integrate with the rest of the kitchen, remember many of these are at least 700 deep so you wont be able to have it flush with the rest of the kitchen unless you move the wall behind it (been there done that!)
3. Again depending on how you want to install it, some doors are flat, others are concave, what do you want? What is your use....
4. As you aren't not interested in the ice-maker, why go for an Amercian Style? The freezer compartment is generally not large enough and you would need another freezer most likely....When you take the key advantage out of it, you loose a lot of the efficiency...

I've got a Whirlpool. Actually made in the US! Recommend it. They are a good manufacturer with a massive market in the States. Spares can be obtained through the Philips UK office in Croydon.

I knew about the Samsung problems, I remember seeing something about them on Watchdog.
We've gone for an LG, brushed steel finish with water and ice dispenser.
The space it's going into is currently occupied by a washing machine and dishwasher, so plumbing is already there.

Re: Any recommendations for American style Fridge/Freezer?

There are a few faults with the yankie style fridge freezers.

1: ice dispenser. When you take ice out you end up leaving a little in the mech, this tells the freezer that its warm and to produce more "cold" so you REALLY FREEZE your food.

2: people assume the harder you push the waster dispenser tap ( like a bar tap) you get faster water. Not true its a lever thats all. it has spring nothing to do with a board . Some people push them harder to receive faster water which does not happen they only damage the unit.

3: Fridge has a " cool spray/shower" system which keeps the fridge cold.

3 types of systems

fan works by pulling air from the freezer, normally goes faulty 1 maybe twice a year **** system avoid. If your out of warrenty you cant fix it and will cost £110 for part alone

Switch/thermostate which opens and closes when the temperture is reached or need colling. Downside it sticks only way to fix it is to a: stick somthing in it ( its like a vent in a brick which you push one way to open and its spring loaded to return)

Plastic pipe i dont know how these work HOWEVER these were the old pre 2008 systems. it simply freezes EVEYTHING IN YOUR FRIDGE. how to fix?
replace pcd board ( common in samsung/whirpool) or let the fridge defrost ( 4 days) and use again when ithappens again repeat. This only happens when the freezer is working on full fridge freeze. The pcd board needs a 9p resister changing ( samsung boards) and it will work. Sorry guys dont remember which one

Apprt from that they are good fridge frrezers

I have a 6 footer and it get more things in that than the yankie style. And i know it wont breakdown.

switch.

Re: Any recommendations for American style Fridge/Freezer?

Samsung offer some very good American Fridge Freezers in your price range - features include frost free freezer and antibacterial protection. LG are also very good but they fall into the higher end of your budget, however you could probably get a silver LG with ice and water dispenser for about £800.

Re: Any recommendations for American style Fridge/Freezer?

We went for an LG GWL207FSQA, in the end.
Brushed stainless steel finish, which looks absolutely fantastic.
Handles that don't go all the way to the ground, so our 6YO can still open the fridge but our 1YO can't use them to haul herself onto her feet.
It's incredibly quiet in operations and works extremely well, making beer so cold it's a treat.
The water and ice dispenser work well too.
It's not the most spacious of fridges/freezers internally, but more than enough for us.
For £750 from appliancesdirect, chuffed.

I've had our Siemens full stainless steel for 5 years now without a single problem...The design is so much more integrated compared to all these cheap ones where just some oem units are plonked in....
