Anyone know anything - Frost Free Freezers

I got my Hotpoint Frost Free Freezer back in March 09 (Model FZA34P).

Up until it has been great, not too noisy and kept stuff frozen and as it was frost free better than my previous freezer.

Recently however I noticed a build-up of ice on the front of the top drawer from time to time, thought nothing off it and rubbed it off, then more recently I was finding a pool of water underneath the front of the machine once per day.

Reckoned this was a fault and booked an engineer as it was still under warranty, was told I would have to wait a week, didn't fancy this pool of water happening every day for a week so decided on some DIY.

Removed all drawers and unscrewed the back cover. On doing this I found a large lump of solid ice attached to the back of this cover, knocked it off then found a pool of ice at the back of the freezer as well, hacked this off with a screwdriver and found the drain hole underneath, this was blocked and causing my water leak. Thawed out the freezer and unblocked hole with hot water, reassembled and now all is fine.

What I want to know is why did this ice form around the drain hole at all and it must have happened over a period of time given the other lump of ice.

Any ideas?
