Best Kettle?

I had a quick search and could not find anything on this (this is where someone proves me wrong).

Anyways, we've gone through a number of kettles at home lately and it's just getting annoying, rather than but another £20-30 one I figure it's a good idea to invest in a decent one, the question is... Which?

I've been looking around online and can't find too much on it, i've seen the little 5 second cup thing or whatever it's called, i'm sure you know what I mean, and that's not what we need.

So can anyone recommend a good solid reliable kettle?
Cheers

Re: Best Kettle?

I'v had a 'Breville Lightning' for years and years now and it gets used a lot. It has never been faulty and boils as fast as the day I bought it. One of the best kitchen items I've ever bought based on reliability, value for money & performance. It also has a very useful 'keep warm' button.

The one I have looks like this:

The quick cup / thing i was talking about taking 5 secs, isn't practical, doesn't boil a lot of water quickly - handy when you want a pan of boiling water to just stick the kettle on.

ASDA Smart Price, 1.7 Litre capacity, viewing windows and boils quickly, £4.75 IIRC, if it's going to go wrong it will do so within a year and you will get a replacement from ASDA.

Unsure? so was I but it's perfectly does it's job!

Re: Best Kettle?

i too bought an expensive kettle, sorry not kettle "the Breville Spectra Water Boiling System" - all fancy - heats up a full jug in 45 seconds, has a keep warm sysyem, changes colour the hotter it gets, oh yeah and stops working or leaks so i have to change it every 2 months - i just keep the box in the cupboard ready to return it to argos for a replacement

Re: Best Kettle?

Had a Russell Hobbs (K2R I think) traditional kettle for around 30 years without any problems.

If the element does expire I believe you can buy a replacement too.

I'd second this - bought one of these 3.5yrs ago to boil water to heat my son's bottles - when the fastboil kettle started leaking via its inspection window we just used this kettle - perfectly fast enough to boil and great VFM.

Re: Best Kettle?

I am amazed how many kettles we have had fail on us lately.
Mainly leaking around seals (like where it indicates the water level) which surprised me not to say possibly dangerous.
These weren't old kettles but new.
We have had to replace 3 on the trot all within weeks of purchase.
We were beginning to think it was something we were doing wrong. But how hard can it be to use a kettle

However, the John Lewis one we have now seems fine. So far...

Yes I bought a similar one from Asda after my expensive kettle broke just outside the 1 year and the Asda kettle is just as good and is still going 2 years later. I can't see me ever buying an expensive one again.

Re: Best Kettle?

I bought an expensive Braun kettle (£80). Lid broke after 6 months. Replacement kettle had same problem. Replaced with cheap one (£30) which has worked fine for over a year. So, no more fancy expensive designer kettles for me.

Re: Best Kettle?

I've got through an awful lot of kettles in recent years, I liked to choose kettles that came with 2 - 3 years guarantees because usually none of the kettles we'd own would last more than about a year. I even used to hang on to the broken ones that the manufacture didn't want back so that I could piece together a working kettle from the good bits once the warranty expired.

One of the worse kettles we've had was a Philips, although it lasted about two years, one day it quite literally blew up sending a shower of hot water in the air - I think it had somehow got water inside the element's jacket which turned to steam blowing a hole in it.

We've currently got a Tefal Express stainless steel kettle which I quite rate. It must be about two years old, but has no leaks and is still working well. It also has a steeply raked spout which prevents water dripping, so you don't get an ugly streak of limescale down the front, which was a problem with the other stainless steel jug kettles I've had in the past.

I have also had probs with dualit kettles, the silver classic ones, both cost £80ish and both elements failed shortly after 12 months.
Replaced 2nd with cookworks silver, very similar looking to dualit, 14.99 and 2 years later still going strong

Re: Best Kettle?

My vote is for Philips. We used a 3000W white plastic one at work for several years before I got the same model for home. Starts boiling the instant it's switched on, still going stong 5 years later and looks as good as the day it was bought. No idea if the current range is as good but I'll be looking at them when this one eventually dies.

After thinking all Dualit kit was great for years and worth the money (despite never owning anything of theirs) I went off them after the Gadget Show toaster test.

Re: Best Kettle?

When I used to work in an electrical shop, I used to return a fair amount of flat element cordless kettles (regardless of make). I'd go for a kettle with a normal element in them as they tend to leak less.

Yes- love my £500 insinkerator!

Though for those on a budget the superkettle is also good at £49.

I find Kenwood ones are quite good. With some of the metal kettles though I've found that sometimes it has this strange metallic taste/small, but either a bit of lemon or bicarb soda soon sorts that out.

I have a dualit one too, had it for about two years now and no problems.
Its used about half a dozen times a day.

amyc - makes a valid point, you need to "de-scale etc" them dependant on how often they are used. It would be no different to "servicing" any electrical appliance, a little tlc goes a long way......

I've had this one for about 12 months,

Tefal Quick Cup - Hot and Cold Water in 3 Seconds: Amazon.co.uk: Home & Garden

I rate it as a kettle but, way above that is the fact that it only boils the exact amount of water I need at a press of a button.

I also hate waiting for the kettle to boil, so, having a mug how bolied water in about 12 seconds is great.

Quite cheap as well IMO - here what you say about large pan, but, I am fairly confident that it would be quicker at boiling 2 pints of water than a standard kettle anyway

Newer model here which might be on interest.

Currys - Shop for Kettles - Tefal BR306 Quick Cup Deluxe Water Dispenser

The one I have looks like this:
Argos.co.uk Quick Order by Argos Catalogue Number
We've got one of these and it does work well...however the blue light has now 'gone out' (after 9 months of use) so you don't know whether it's switched on.

Kettles seem to be our nemesis. Never had one for more than a year!
