Buty how can you watch the WM9 stream ?

I wish I knew how to view the WM9 stream.
It is on PID 1521 (05f1 hex) currently running at about 6.3 Mbps
(vs 23.39 on the MPEG-HDTV PID).
My Tsreader can extract the data packets belonging to the WM9 stream as a binary file. It indicates a MAC-address and also an IP address (228.0.0.84).
Trouble is there are other headers (MPE-related headers, I suspect) to strip off before WM9 will recognise it as a wmv file.

If anyone else can play and has any success please let me know.
I have sent the full transport stream including null PIDs (2.5 minutes of it on a data CD) to " a man who knows" but he is in the USA until next week so by the time we have a solution the transmission will be gone :-(

Excellent stuff

So how's the region protection implemented on T2 etc.. gonna work? PC receives WM9 stream with sub carrier looping "must phone home" - ET style

Great development - looks like HDTV in €urope is gaining momentum....

Will have a look during the week - fingers crossed we'll get it working.

Thats the worrying part - I have no problem with this where, say, an STB has to permanently attached to a phone as per Sky Digital (Euro HDTV content playing back on a Euro set-top box) although this would probably be less to do with protecting WM9 than ensuring that STB's are not sold outwith specific geographic areas, again as per Sky.

But, I do worry that WM9 DVD's may also require the same thing - a WM9 DVD player attached to a phone line. If T2 is anything to go by anyone trying to activate an R1 disc from outside the US may well find it doesn't play. Buying a US DVD player for R1 DVD's won't work either if each DVD has to be individually activated - it was bad enough on a PC, god knows what will happen if the phone number is hard-coded in the player. Anyone dialling in from abroad will be spotted a mile off - if they can get the player to dial out of the country in the first place! Could probably get around it sooner or later but would probably be a lot of hassle that has to be repeated for each disc.

Theres good and bad elements to WM9. Good for HDTV, bad for DVD copy protection.

We'll see,
Paul

DRM

You raise a good point regarding the downside ( for consumers)
of WM9 .
The suppliers are likely to play along with it too.
I heard recently of someone who had time to kill at an airport asking in Dixons which DVD players were region free.
The reply was that "for ethical reasons" Dixons will supply R2 only.
I wonder when it became a matter of ethics !
More like knuckling under to the power of Hollywood .
I see no moral or ethical issues here , just protectionism.

Chris

I'd like to take a look at the stream and see if I can get the WM9 out. (You have PM with my address)

JohnAd - see your PM, CD in post

Have responded to your PM - have a look.
My only fear is that you won't have a stream to work with before the tests stop :-(

I have managed to burn it & send it for tonight's (5.30 PM) 1st class post though.
