HDMI incompatibility problem.
Hello AVForums,
Today i got my Samsung HT-AS710 AV receiver and so far i have spent about 4 hours trying to set it up, with no luck.
I have a HD TV (Pioneer PDP-436XDE) HDMI connected to the AV output, a DVD player (LG DR198H) HDMI1 connected to AV input. The AV receiver is new to the setup. The DVD plays perfectly when connected directly to the HD TV by HDMI.
The best result i can get at the moment is TV sound, but no picture whatsoever, my HDMI DVD player seems to be communicating with the AV receiver, however the video is not reaching the TV for some reason.
All the connections are new HDMI cables, so i presumed it would just be plug and play.
I am wondering if there would be any compatibility issues between the DVD player and the AV receiver, could this be true?
The AV receiver has 2x HDMI ports and you should be able just to switch between DVD player and the Sky HDMI box, that i'm getting in december.
Any help on this issue would be well appreciated,
Natsu.

I must admit I'm not familiar with the kit you have, but I have read that sometimes the order in which different devices are turned on can affect whether the HDMI connections work correctly or not.
Try turning on the Tv, then the amp, then the DVD, and see if that works. Or if not change the order round a bit. I'd probably also check that there's no switch on the amp or the remote control for the amp that disables video output (might also be worth connecting a composite cable from DVD player to amp and another to the TV to see if you get any pictur via that)

Re: HDMI incompatibility problem.
Hello Natsu
I'd also add to cerebros's good advice that a full system 'reboot' is a good idea when introducing a new unit to your 'HDMI' signal path; power everything OFF (not just to Standby) and see if a reboot gets you up and running.
The HDCP handshaking implementation in your AV Receiver or DVD Player is most likely your problem - one or other may not be set up to work with or as a 'repeater' with your Display.
If the system 'reboot' and or 'switch on' routine doesn't sort things you may have to look into new firmware for the DVD player or AV Receiver.
Best regards
Joe

Re: HDMI incompatibility problem.
I have the same Samsung Amp as you and experienced the same difficulties! Being a bloke, I tried to set the unit up without the instructions and encountered exactly the same issues as you.
You need to make sure that the input mode is set to DVD HDMI (Page 19 in the instruction manual) and then also check the HDMI settings (Pages 26, 27, 28, 29). Be patient and follow the instructions.....it'll work!
I am sure that your equipment is fine (compatability-wise) and it's just your amp settings!
Good luck

Re: HDMI incompatibility problem.
Hi,
Thanks for the excellent advice, well for now i have opted to use an optical cable, with the HDMI going from the DVD to the TV and the optical going from the DVD to the amp reciever.
We will definately try a full reboot and let you know how it goes, its good to hear im not the only one with this problem.

You may find that one or more of your bits of gear only does stereo via HDMI, probably the DVD player if I was to hazard a guess & to get 5.1 sound you must connect DVD-AMP using optical or coax .
