some HDTV content questions...

does anyone know a website where i can read up on the details of the HD standard. such as all the formats, 480p 720p 1080i 1080p etc... also i would like to know about playing HD content on a computer.

at the moment i have a dell 2005fpw, p4 3.0ghz prescott 800mhz fsb, 1gb ram ocz pc3200 cas2 ram, ati x800xt pe, computer.

i can play all the WMD 1080i HD content fine (even with full screen on), but it does strugel a bit with the quicktime ones. i don't think i can play the 1080p apple ones at all.

the 720p apple ones seem ok though, only thing is when i play it in FULL SCREEN it looks really pixelated and a bit jerky, where as the 720p is fine in 100% view.

like i said the WMD 1080i plays fine in all sizes, really smooth etc... can any1 explain why this is happening? thanks in advanced, bye.


edit: ps. i also get earing sometimes on those HD trailers, but then again i think that might be my monitor, as i get tearing in DOOM3, and 3dmark05 benchmark aswell...

Google should bring up the history of the various flavours of HD used around the world.

As for the playback issues well Apple are using the H.264 codec which is far more CPU hungry than the MS WMV codec so as the content increases in resolution the demands on the CPU increase dramatically.

what about the tearing effect? is that the screen or the computer hardware itself?

Since you are not having problems with all full screen HD clips that would rule out the display but obviously as the demands on the cpu increase by playing higher res content problems may occur.

No direct experience of this solution but a thread or two ago refresh rate on the monitor was given as a solution for image tearing, you'll find it here.
