What has better picture quality? IMAX or HD?

Imax - it's shot on 70mm film and has a resolution of 38720 x 24120 (source Wikipedia ), compared to the maximum HD resolution of1920x1080

I doubt you can buy or even find IMAX content with that resolution. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

but 70mm film is an Analogue format, its a film format, and as such, doesnt really adhere to any particular resolution.

They playback on a digital projections system plus they use six channel uncompressed sound, which will blow dolby or dts away as there is no loss in quality...

They've started to roll out digital projectors, but the resolution on those (as far as im aware) doesnt go much above 4k. So if you put an IMAX film that has been filmed on 70mm and transferred across to a 70mm imax projector, youll get a higher quality image than you will from a movie shot digitally and projected digitally. The drawback is that the 70mm film stock will degrade with time.
just found this: IMAX digital resolution is 5616 x 4096 pixels
