Dont buy either if your baseing buying a console for media playback. Buy a console based on games you want for it not media play back.

Microsoft have said nothing on the matter, other than 1 quote Bill Gates made in June that said 'future versions of the Xbox 360 may include HD DVD or something else'

if you buy the x360 at launch, it will not, on most likely never will, play hd-dvd. Only future editions of x360 will 'possibly' play hd-dvd. Also, they can never release games that support the extra storage hd-dvd can offer, since that will exclude everybody who bought x360 at launch with a regular dvd drive. So a future x360 version will possibly contain hd-dvd movie compatibility, and may not be the best movie player (like the ps2 was really crap at dvd) so if you want hd-dvd playback buy a dedicated player.
Ps3 have bluray from get go so it'll play bluray movies, have games which benefit from bluray storage etc etc.

as supermackem said buy a console based on the games released on it.
and the movie format war that is about to happen will have little or no influence on the content of games on these machines, which is what you primarily want to use it for.

biased opinion: buy the ps3.

Gotta admit the media playback on games consoles is of no interest to me... its all about the games and the features... particularly online... thats why I will be buying the Xbox360... the LIVE online service is beyond compare in the console world (not hard I suppose) and Sony will never catch up.

Sony seem to be a little too much "style over substance"

Microsoft is not putting a HD-DVD drive into their XBOX360.

http://www.imdb.com/news/sb/2005-09-27
However, Microsoft, while saying that the next generation of its Windows operating system will be designed to work with HD DVD, decided not to integrate the format in its upcoming Xbox 360 videogame console, which will use a standard DVD system.

If you're looking for a console that will make the most of an HD display, then PS3 is the way to go, on launch day you'll be able to pick up a game and a movie and enjoy both in High Definition. That's my plan anyway!

If Style means I dont have to fork out an extra £300 for a BluRay player when the PS3 will do it all for me then

Sony arnt dumb, the PS3 will have a vastly improved online gaming service compared to the minimal efforts that they gave the PS2.

Everyboday is just thinking ps3 will playback br movies. I have looked through loads of the news etc when they annouced it but they didnt really go into detial about the br movie playback that i can find. Would sony offer you full br playback on ps3, when its trying to shift br plays at upto three times what ps3 should launch for. On paper ps3 should be the best playback unit also due to all the extra ommph with the super cell lol and the 512mb and the gfx card. Just seems a strange move to me.

Sure I know that it ain't gonna play HD-DVD stuff (due to the lack of an HD-DVD drive), but has this lack of upscaling been confirmed by MS? If that's the case then I'll have to be looking at getting an Oppo or Samsung HD950 for my upscaling DVD thrills...which would be an ass-pain.

As many have already said, a console rarely makes a good device for playback of movies. Get a stand alone player for that.

The 360 will NOT have an HD DVD drive from day one and may never have one. Then again it might, but no one knows when.

HD DVD players will launch in Japan this year and early next year in the US.

Blu Ray is already available in Japan, but these are recorders and not really players. The first propper Blu Ray player will indeed be the PS3.

Sonys idea is to have a large instaled based of blu ray players in the form of the PS3. Thus making it possible for sony to start selling Blu Ray movies.

Similar to the PS2 with DVD's and the PSP with UMD's. Before the PSP there were no UMD movies.

The PS3 will come with HDMI conections that I assume will be HDCP. So we should be able to conect our PS3's to an HDTV and play hi def games and movies.

The 360 is focusing on games. It will play HD games up to 1080i through component or VGA to an HDTV or PC monitor capable of high resolutions.

No HD video from day one.

Hi

After reading that thread its made a bit clearer to me now
personally I would like HD playback for the Plasma weather its Blue Ray
or HD DVD I dont think it matters in the 1st instance I bought the plasma
because my daughter kept on she wanted my Sony 36" CRT so thought I
would have a Plasma to keep in line with whats happening in TV then had
to make discision on HD or NO HD I went the HD line so thats where we
now and want to make the right discision on Playback i don't really want
games but the PS3 seems to be a option and the Xbox 360 is on the
backburner maybe will cancel that on monday by waiting for the PS3 to
come out in Spring 2006 will see how the Sky HD broadcast box and setup
is going and maybe by then the HD war might be a little clearer

Terry

of course the thing to remember also is that the PS3 will be about £500 because of the Blu-ray drive, might be worth it if standalone Blu-ray players are expensive. I for one am getting the Xbox360 now as the PS3 wont be seen in the UK till the end of next year, before that HD DVD Players will be out, aswell as Blu-Ray Players, I will one of them when they come out, will probably end up being cheaper than the PS3.

wow, what a bunch of speculation posted as fact! where to start? Just to point out that all of my comments are my opinion, but I wanted to try and bring some balance/context to this.

based on what? at its core, bluray is just a DVD drive with a different laser. Considering Sony are one of the founders and own a lot of IP in the area, they could quite easily absorb the R&D costs 'creatively'. I don't expect Bluray drive to add much to the manufacturing cost of the PS3 at all. Certainly within a year of launch it'll be negligible. How Sony choose to price it, thats a different matter.

Maybe, maybe not. Bluray will be the first to benefit from a completely digital path as standard. No need for tuned DACs, as you don't need to convert. Just decode the stream and squirt it out your HDMI port.

Combined with CELL (probably more powerful than any chips in standalone players), PS3 has the potential to be as good as any standalone player, at least via HDMI (component/scart may vary wildly). A lot depends on the software Sony use, but as they are a founder of Bluray, they should know what they are doing.

spin the question around? Would Sony put a bluray drive in the PS3 unless they would be pushing movies on you? The DVD rom part is likely to be faster at transferring stuff, and initial games will most likely be on DVD.

I think the standalone players will be (1) from other manufacturers, and (2) recorders.

Also, Sony have a vested interest in Bluray as a disc format taking off, as they will make money from companies licensing it. Putting it in a mass market product like PS3 is a very good way of achieving the kind of penetration they need to push their format forward.

Still, one thing I've learned from reading this thread - I'll still need my xbox with XBMC for streaming my movies, so I suppose I should buy component cables for it.
