But the £400 is for the hardware. The HD channels available is a seperate issue that you determine depending on the additional monthly premium. If the HD box comes with a decent size HDD, say 500GB, then £400 would seem reasonable to me, (compared to DTV boxes with 80GB HDD going for £200).

Considering existing Sky customers can upgrade to Sky+ for £49 and there's talk of Sky giving Sky+ away for free incl subscription I would still have to say that £400 is too much for an upgraded PVR that will only be used to show a limited service in the short term. Also I've heard that HDD is more likely to be only 160Gb.

talking of what the HD box is going to cost will make more sense when sky say what HD content we are going to get for our money. the world cup next year in HD makes my mouth water.

Battlestar Galactica series 2 for me They have it on the comet showreel (badly compressed, but its still there). I have the first 10 episodes downloaded from the US, but I'm trying to resist in case Sky have it in HD.

Couldn't wait myself season 2 is good

I think £400 is fair for first dibs for the new Sky HD system, you can easily pay that for a decent satellite receiver.

in Home Cinema Choice magazine it says that people should go into Comet and register now in order to ensure you get the first generation HD box....?

I've not heard this elsewhere.......is this true...?

One of my cats sleeps on top of the Sky+ box, with buttons on the top of the SkyHD box I could have my channels changed by moggy. This is not good.

Wish it was white / silver too.

If the intital launch is restricted then being on a register list would I assume get you first refusal but if it's a full on nationwide launch then being on the registered list may just mean you get a box a few weeks earlier than others might.

It's likely that signing up on the SKY HD website is just as good.

Yeah, I'd rather pay half that, but I've been waiting for this for too long, and I would be spending just as much on a D-VHS player and a Sky+ upgrade AND a hard disc upgrade anyway.

Any idea whether you'll be able to subscribe without buying the box?

Why would you do that? Honest question. Don't we need the box in order to get SkyHD? Or will there be other 3rd party boxes we could buy? Never heard.

Personally i'll wait to see what kind of content, and if the quality is good enough, before committing to SkyHD.
