HDCP/DVI-D question

I have a Philips 26PF9956 TV in the bedroom and I'm looking to buy a DVD player to make use of the DVI-D connection. I have 2 questions about this:

1) The TV is non HDCP compliant. Does that mean I cannot use it with a player with DVI/HDMI output?

2) Does DVI-D carry sound?

To answer your questions directly, No. and No. Unfortunately if there is no HDCP you wont be able to use an upscaling player like the denon 3910. There are however ways arround HDCP. I just dont know the details.

DVI-D is picture only but is interchangable with HDMI. HDMI is the one that can carry both picture and sound.

As I said before, there are ways to hack HDCP, or some players that upscale through component instead of DVI-D/HDMI.

Hmm. I was afraid of that. Not too worried about DVI being picture only because there are ways around that, but the fact that I can't use the DVI slot for DVDs is very annoying, and frankly makes me wonder why on earth they put it there in the first place.

What a waste of money this TV is. All this HDCP information wasn't as loudly shouted about when I bought it, I kinda feel a bit cheated.

Unfortunately most new products that are going to come out in the future like Bluy Ray will use HDCP through whatever digital conection they use. (probably HDMI).

However, as I said before there are ways to hack through HDCP encription. Look arround on AV forums. I remember seeing a thread about that.

Alternatively for the moment you could try getting an upscaling DVD player that can upscale without the need of an HDCP conection.

This is only a temporary solution though.

The Oppo Digital OPDV971H does not use HDCP, and upscales through the DVI-D output. Sounds like your best bet.

The upscaling Samsung DVD players can have the HDCP disabled via a remote hack.

I thnk the HDCP-less DVI inputs on displays are there to allow PCs to be connected, as well as the MPEG2 HD receivers with DVI outputs (such as those sold for use with HD-1 aka Euro1080)
