So with games in 1080i, the Dell wouldn't need to scale the image. Therefore if you had the Samsung, or similar sized resolution panel, 720p would be the best default option in order to minimise the amount of scaling that is going on. (Or not as the case maybe if the panel is 1280 x 720)

I'll certainly be comparing closely games running in 720p against 1080i - seeing the Gamecube operate in both i and p, the latter may well be the best option (for me) on the XB360 even if there is a loss in resolution. As to which is best, I don't think we should go there?
Hmm, I'm confused then. As the 360 outputs 720p as standard according to their specifications, and is THEN downscaled for other resolutions, so I'm presuming it's upscaled for 1080i?

Hmm!

It's still not been confirmed. The X360 will be out in little more than a month in the US and a month and a half in Europe/UK so we'll know by then.

I'm making the assumption that because the specs say it has various video modes, as with the Xbox the user would therefore be able to select their choice of output. US NTSC Xbox's had a display option memu which allowed the used to select up to 1080i - I can't see why the XB360 would be any different - except this time including those options on the PAL unit as well (rather than us relying on importing or chipping)

So there is no scaling going on. If the user selects 1080i on the Xbox and the game supports it all well and good, if not, the game just auto selects the next best display option.

It says it has those specifications, but they said themselves that it outputs in 720p natively (or whatever the term is) and is downscaled for lesser TVs and so on.

.....well if 720p is the minimum it would obviously have to scale to lesser TV's - with 1080i being a quoted output, either that will be a selectable user defined output or it will be selected automatically by the XB360 dependant upon what display it is connected to. Either way, the unit will output 1080i and this will either be scaled on 720p TV's or will not be selectable. I can't any form of automatic display detection method working tbh.

They probably talk about 720p more as it's the display output that likely to be used most.
