a friend has lent me his Technics SU-X955 with speaker for a children's party but it does not seem to have a line in connection for a microphone. Maplins tried to sell me a £25 pre-amp microphone connection - is there a cheaper way of connecting the microphone?

What kind of connector does the microphone have? Is it a 3 pin connector or a 1/4" phone plug. If a 1/4" phone plug, you can get an adapter to connect to the RCA stereo inputs, just don't expect much from it. The output levels are not that high.

Ideally, you would want some type of pre-amp or mixer to control the mic levels and boast the output.

Again, depending on the type of connector, you can buy a simple cable adapter to connect it to your stereo inputs.
