Turntables

I hope this is posted in the right place (there are sooooo many sections!) if not I'm sure I will be told so and the post moved

Hi all I'm new here (posting anyway) having just bought myself a complete new kit for my lounge (after much reading and digesting here) and many thanks to those who are in the know about these things.

Now I have 1 problem (not really a problem) I dragged my old turntable out of the loft (to play all my old 12" "club" records) a Technics SL-BD20 only to find out that I needed a pre amp! as I had my sons party on the day I finished my lounge I needed the turntable to work!! so rushed to maplins and bought one (£20) I was unaware that I would need one but..............rome was not built in a day, my problem is that I concealed all sockets/cables and do not have room to fit the pre-amp transformer plug into the config!! so I am looking to buy a new turntable with a pre-am/stage built in, £300!!!!! thats what my new amp and speakers cost me!
Anyway I have resigned myself to buying a new turntable and would like some suggestions on the best to buy with a pre-amp built in (would that be powered by a plug? or through the amp?) a normal plug I may be able to fit and conceal, but the "transformer" plug is just too big on the pre-amp, also is there a market for "vintage" seperates? for instance if I could sell all my "old" kit I may be able to get a decent turntable.

Technics SL-BD20
Technics SL-PG100A CD mash player
Technics ST-G470L Tuner
Technics SU-VX500/600 Amp(will check the box to see what model)
Wharfedale 507.2 speakers in black

Any ideas?

Re: Turntables

Pro-Ject do several good TT's with phono pre-amps built in. See here Henley Designs Award Winning Hi-Fi & AV Equipment

Happy hunting

Re: Turntables

Sorry, but, you have heard of extension cords, haven't you?

Since you have all Technics, why not buy a Technics turntable. The 1200 models seems to be highly recommended, though just slightly above your price range. Though, I think you still need an external pre-amp.

Personally, I have recently take an interest in the Denon DP-300F because it has auto-start and auto-return, but for some reason, it doesn't seem to be available in Europe?

The Pro-Ject band of turntables seem to be popular and highly rated, and most have built-in pre-amps.

ALTHOUGH, all that said, a quick look on-line indicates that the SU-VX500 HAS A PHONO INPUT, and one would reasonably assume that the SU-VX600 does as well.

Exactly how did you determine you needed an external Phono Pre-Amp?

Try just plugging your turntable directly into the PHONO input and see how it sounds.

Re: Turntables

I used to have an SU-VX500. I don't know why you need a pre-amp as the Technics comes with one ready integrated that is switchable between MM and MC. Just set yours on MM and plug the leads from the t/t into the phono sockets on the rear of the amp. They are the ones top left. Make sure you connect the ground lead to the earthing screw next to them.

Re: Turntables

The list of separates are what I no longer use (and want to get rid of), I have bought a AV amp that does not support the turntable without a preamp, which I do not have the room for as I have consealed all my wires I dont want an extension cord, but thx for your input

**edit**
I have bought a Project Debut MkII SB TT, which solves all my problems, and a very nice buy for £240 delivered, great looks and great sound, but if anyone wants to buy my old Technics AA gear PM me
