| Re: Krell KAV-400xi and B&W 703
After talking to another Lyngdorf CD-1 owner, I was advised to change the default output gain from 0dB to -3dB or even lower.
The Lyngdorf CD-1 allows adjusting the output gain on both balanced outputs (XLR) and non-balanced (RCA), from -6.0db to -0.0dB, in 0.5dB steps.
At 0dB, output gain is maximum with 3.8 Volt RMS
At -3dB, output is 2.7 Vrms
At -6dB, output is 1.0 Vrms
Higher voltages allow improving the Signal/Noise ratio, but can be too much for the amplifier or pre-amplifier. Krell KAV-400xi accepts 3.8Vrms without any problem at its inputs (both XLR and RCA), apparently. In this case, adjusting the volume knob from 400xi to 10, produces enough sound pressure for a normal listening.
When lowering the output gain to 1.0V (-6dB), is necessary to increase the volume knob to at least 18 to get the same SPL. (Didn't use any SPL meter, but can do so).
However, for some reason, in my system, the sibilant of human voices become much more prominent at higher gain (0dB).
After some listening I've found that an output gain of -4.0dB, about 2.3V, is the best value for achieving softer sibilant sounds, but preserves a good sense of pace and dynamics.
