Good bookshelf and amplifier combination?

I have been looking at the Cambridge Audio A1, and a set of bookshelf speakers, I have a budget of maybe £150 for speakers and amplifier.

I will be connecting this to my computer via 3.5MM > Phono, later on I may buy an external DAC, does anyone have any DAC reccomendations?

My room is roughly 8x10 foot, if you need any more information, I can give you as much asI can.

Re: Good bookshelf and amplifier combination?

If you are playing standard MP3, don't waste your money on a DAC. The resolution of your sound card is adequate to reproduce MP3 quality sound, even CD quality sounds.

However, if you are playing high quality lossless audio files, then a DAC might be helpful. Cambridge Audio's DACMagic is one of the more popular items, but it is not cheap. It will cost roughly what your entire stereo system costs.

Also, if you can scrape up the money, the Cambridge Audio A5 at £119 is probably the most outstanding deal on an amp available now. It is a full solid 60 watts per channel. And if you can raise your budget, this is an amp that should server you well for many many years.

Re: Good bookshelf and amplifier combination?

As you are talking about stereo amps and not AV amps, I will move this to HiFI seperates for you.

Re: Good bookshelf and amplifier combination?

I figure amps are pretty solid, so used from a reputable seller is fine with amps? I have seen A5s go for like £60 on ebay, this would give more some more money for the speakers.

Does anyone know any good speakers to look out for? As I said, I dont mind used.

Thanks for the advice.

EDIT:

I figure you may want to know my music types, I guess this could effect the types of speakers/amp combos.

I mainly listen to anything under electronic dance music, so trance, house, garage, occasional bit of drum and bass, everything under that fork really.
