Good Combination?

Im currently re-decorating my room, whilst im in the process, im renewing my audio gear.
I had a Panasonic SC-AK520 unit, which iv had for the past 4 years, its huge, looks out of date and its now gone!

Iv wanted to move onto seperates for a while, so im going to make the move now!

I think iv figured a good combination, I dont have a big budget, so entry level stuff is what im going to be going for, and instead of spreading the cost on an amplifier, CD, tuner..etc Im only going to be getting an amp and speakers first off... the CD player can come later...

The main input will be from my computer fed to the amp, iv got an audigy card so hopefully wont skimp on quality.

Iv decided to go for a pair of Mordaunt Short 902i's and a Cambridge Audio 340a-se amp.

The 2 speakers are going to be held on brackets in the top corners of the room.

Would you say the amp and speakers were a good combination?

Oh and im new on the site, iv had a good look round already, iv picked up on quite abit aswell, just from browsing round!

Re: Good Combination?

I would say that is a very good combination. Those who have any of the Mordaunt Short speakers all seem uniformly please with what they got for the money they spent. The Modaunts have low power requirement and decent bass response.

The Cambridge Audio amp is 45 watt per channel which, while it isn't high powered, is certainly adequate powered. I had a 45 watt amp for years, and it served me extremely well.

You might take a look at the Cambridge Audio A5 (£119), which is a classic old style basic stereo amp, but it has an impressive 60 watts per channel.

Likely the 340 is a more modern amp with more features, and that might appeal to you. But the 340 is only about £199, so that is still very affordable.

Either way, for a low cost system, this set up will work fine.

Now we could recommend other speakers and other amps, but in the end they won't necessarily be any better than what you have already selected.

Just my opinion.

Cheers Steve,

Its only going to be going in my room, so id say 45Watts is ample, im more concerned about audio quality really.

Going to be picking the stuff up from richer sounds on friday!

Thanks for the advice.

Re: Good Combination?

Got the kit yesterday, im really impressed!
Im meant to be installing them in my room next week, but I couldnt wait, I just had to had to listen to them!

Iv just started to run them in according to the instructions, and already they sound awesome

Just a quick question, what kind of volume do I need to have them at during the running in process, Iv got them playing just below a quater of the volume at the minute.

Re: Good Combination?

I think just play them normally, though certainly not excessively rattle-the-windows loud. Break them in the way you will use them, though within reason.

I think the speakers will mellow with time, and if you are impressed now, you will certainly be more impressed in a couple of weeks.
