Simple HiFi System for Ipod - Help Needed

Hi all,

I am looking for a hifi system which will be used only for an Ipod Nano (4th Gen).

I have speced up the following -

Cambridge Audio A1 v3 Amp
Cambridge Audio ID10 Dock
Denon SCM37 Speakers

Total comes to just under £170.

Is this combo suited i.e amp with the specific speakers?
Also, will the CA dock work with the new Ipod Nano's?
The budget is actually £150 but am able to spend a little more.

Thanks in advance

If your budget is really that tight, and you can't wait until you have more money, then that is probably a pretty fair system. The amp is a little weak with only 25 watts per channel. But I've heard other 25 watt amps that sounded OK. It would be much better if you could possibly move up to the Cambridge Audio A5 model with 60 watts/ch for £119.

The speakers, based on specs alone, look pretty good. The respond down to 45hz which is excellent for such a small speakers.

So, again, if your budget is really that restricted, then this will probably be a pretty fair system for you iPod.

You really don't need a 'dock' for your iPod. A simple cable with a headphone style plug on one end and two RCA connections on the other is sufficient to connect any portably MP3 device to any audio amp.

Just a few thoughts.

Whenever you have a really tight budget, consider going second hand. It really opens up your options and allows you to access mid range kit at bargain prices.
Remeber you will also need speaker stands and some speaker cable, which will cost around £1-£2 a metre even for the cheapest stuff and so can soon add up.
What is the quality of the audio on your Nano? If it's at apples standard bit rate, or from the itunes store it's likely to sound poor (well, not particularly good) through a decent amp and speakers, even if it sounds acceptable through headphones. Consider re-ripping your music at a higher bit rate so long as you can accept the trade off between storage space and quality.

It's a bit over your budget but it's a significant saving on what they are brand new and they got an extremely glowing endorsement from whf, they seem to tick all the boxes as far as you are concerned. Although these will soon disappear, so if you are going to buy them, buy them now.
