Vintage Bang & Olufsen

My Grandad recently passed away and Dad has just called me saying he's found a Bang & Olufsen stereo in the cupboard, a suprise to me! No details but theres an amp, turntable and some 'huge' speakers. Dad said the turntable had an unusual arm on it.

It will be at least 30 years old, was their stuff from this time good? Is it likely to be better than my mid-high end pioneer from a similar time and is it likely to have any value?

I know its very vague but i won't have any details until i can have a proper look in about a months time.

These people could probably give you some idea of the value of the B and O gear ...

Preowned Bang and Olufsen, B&O TVs, Beovision, Beolab, Beosound, Beocom, West Sussex, UK

From your description ** it sounds as if it might be a Beosystem 2400 from 1977 ...

Re: Vintage Bang & Olufsen

The turntable with an "unusual arm" is likely to be one of the tangential drives.

What you really need to do is to get your Dad to take a look at the kit and write down the model numbers. We can then provide a much better answer.

Re: Vintage Bang & Olufsen

My parents had a complete set of stuff like this.

It was wedge shaped, veneered woord with black plastic panels. The buttons are all touch sensetive, and I think it included a double tape deck, radio and amp, pop up cd tray, and a turntable similar to the one you described. I thought it was futuristic stuff back in the 90's!

It had a liniar tracking arm and direct drive platter, but with a special exta arm next to it. This had a sensor on it which could be used to seek the track joins and therefore use previous/next tracks. Unfortunatly it jammed up a few minutes after trying to use it a few years back, and we couldn't find a way to fix it so it's in bit in the shed! It used special 9 pin din plugs to allow control from the master unit/amp.

I don't think the accompaning speakers could be that huge, maybe a foot or so tall. I was miuch smaller last time i ever saw them. I'm pretty sure everything else works.

It looks pretty much like the stuff in the picture above. I guess i'd like to know if it has any value either! I don't have any access to model numbers currenty as it's all set up at our holiday home and due to the stellar weather conditions i hven't been up there recently.

Re: Vintage Bang & Olufsen

The Tangential tunrtables are still much reveered there are specialist B&O foru,s where good condition kit still sells well, My dad still uses his Beomaster 1700 circa 1974 now with new Tuntable and a CDP.....

Re: Vintage Bang & Olufsen

Sorry maybe a little OT but in the vauge area:
We are intending to update our 29 year old CRT B&O tv to an LCD the new £1800 B&O to our ears does not sound anywhere near as good, the £1000 Loewe does not sound bad at all, but still not as good.....so in no particular rush to update now.

Re: Vintage Bang & Olufsen

Hi guys, the model numbers are

Amp: Beomaster 3000-2
Turntable: Beogram 1200
Speakers: Not sure but they're about 80-90cm tall and 30-40cm wide with some black feet on the bottom, sizes are a guess from the photos my dad's sent me

Re: Vintage Bang & Olufsen

The Beogram 1200 was an entry level model and did not have the tangential arm. The Beomaster 3000 was a low-mid level receiver (amp + tuner). It may have some value to a collector, but I don't think it will garner much if you don't find the specialists. Take a look at Beocentral - Bang & Olufsen reference.

Re: Vintage Bang & Olufsen

The Beogram 1200 is quite sought after if in good working order, the cartridge is very futuristc-looking considering it's age. The Beomaster would sell well too but may have suffered from the years in storage.

If you can give us a type number from the back of the speakers it will help to identify them.

Re: Vintage Bang & Olufsen

Hi all. sorry to hijack this thread. i have a beomaster 1700 and a beogram deck. i have tried in vain to find a value for these. they are in good working order. i realise that they are not at the top end of B&O equipment. but any news would be appreciated. Again if this post offends in any way please remove it.

Re: Vintage Bang & Olufsen

The Beogram's value will depend on the model, condition and whether or not it has a working stylus/cartridge. It would be impossible to estimate a value without knowing this.

There were two Beomaster 1700s a wood-veneered tuner from the mid-70's which is worth around £10-15 depending on condition and a tuner/amplifier from the early 1980'ds with 'piano key' type switches at the front. These are slightly more sought-after and would fetch around £20-50 on eBay depending on condition and luck. Non-working examples of either Beomaster have no resale value.

the beogram is cool, I have always wanted one of those. If you are eager to use your old new system you could always download a copy of the manual to drool over. www.beomanuals.com

Re: Vintage Bang & Olufsen

I just discovered this thread as I need to dispose of a complete system from 1986 and wanted to get an idea as to what it might be worth :

BEOMASTER 3000 Tuner amplifier Silver/black
BEOGRAM 3000 Turntable Silver/black
BEOCORD 2000 Tape deck Silver/black
BEOVOX MCX35 Speakers Black

All in good condition except not used for several years - if anyone can point me to someone who might want it I will recheck it's all working and photograph it.

Re: Vintage Bang & Olufsen

You will make more selling items separately. On eBay Approximate values would be

Beogram and Beomaster - around £50 each if turntable has a working stylus/cartridge. You will make £40+ for the cartridge if sold separately and £20-30 for the turntable.

Beocord and speakers maybe £10-20 each but casette decks are hard to shift these days. There are better B&O speakers from that era.

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum. I have recently acquired an old B&O Beomaster 1400M amplifier/tuner and some speakers. The system is in very good condition, apart from the tuning knob, which is no longer working, due to the tuning string inside, which snapped. This is as a result of the tuning mechanism, which had perished, due to age and literally disintegrated. I'm now looking for just this mechanism. Can anyone here assist, or put me into contact with someone who could? I'm in South Africa, so it will need to be shipped here. I have attached some pics of the part I'm looking for.

The 1400M is a lovely unit, but it is around 40 years old now and parts are hard to come by.

Your best bet is to contact Martin, a B&O enthusiast in Denmark who goes by the username 'Dillen' on the forum at BeoWorld - Everything Bang & Olufsen. You will need to join the forum and send him a personal message or post in the 'Vintage B&O' section.

I don't know if anyone has taken a B&O apart, but if you have, you would know what real craftsmanship really means! I was astounded by the detail and quality of the manufacture, assembly and materials. This is truly a bespoke hand built item. I even found a little brown envelope inside, with the schematic drawings! There surely could be no comparative oriental unit, anywhere near the class of B&O.

Beomaster 1400M: Tuning drive repair

Hi,

I had the same problem. Solution:
I found an old HP printer/scanner which had been dumped. There are dozens of plastic cogs inside such devices. I found one which was a close fit to the original. Maybe I was lucky, but I found one which fitted exactly and even had the same spindle size. Just needed the axis shortening and epoxy glue to stick to the spindle. Worked perfectly.

Regards
Keith
