How to examine amplifier: specifications

I'm looking to buy an amplifier and speakers.
I would like to know what amplifier specifications are important to consider.

Can I tell from the specs if the frequencies will have a proper balance: not bright in the treble; base not boomy etc.

I am looking for something on a budget. I would appreciate references to any online sources or magazines for reviews. I will probably be looking at something used. I Also would like to hear any suggestions.

Thanks.

Re: How to examine amplifier: specifications

As in your speakers post, specifications tell you little about how an amp will sound in the real world. They can “hint” at levels of performance, and for this very reason it’s not uncommon for some specifications to be very inventive.

The only time I’d be concerned about amp/speaker specification is have an amp at least as powerful as the min requirement of the speakers.

No.

As has been mentioned , there's a lot of invention around specifications - especially those of AV amplifiers.

Perhaps the only critical issue is whether of not a particular amplifier can drive a particular speaker. In this case the impedance of the speaker matters; as does the ability of the amplifier to drive a particular load.

The best advice is to find a dealer you like and ask to listen to some combinations of speakers and amplifiers. Most dealers do part exchanges of kit so often have second hand amplifiers or speakers.

Re: How to examine amplifier: specifications

How much power do I need for an amp? My living room is approximately 12' X 12'. I would sit probably 6" to 7' from the speakers.

At this point I want an amp for first for music. I thought a stereo amplifier would be better for music than a surround sound amp. At least this is what I have read (surround amps were designed for primarily for home theater). Am I thinking correctly on this?

Thanks.

Yes. But the amount of power you need from the amplifier does depend on which speakers you intend to buy and this depends on what your budget is. Your room isn't large and we don't know what else is in the room. Soft furnishings, carpet and curtains all effect the overall sound you hear.

The others are right. You need to listen to some amp - speaker combos at your local store first with music you enjoy and go from there. You will soon discover what you truly dislike and you then need to try out the possibles in your home environment. This is not a five minute exercise and patience is required. Get someone who enjoys your sort of music to go with you A second pair of ears is always useful but ultimately your ears are the ones that have to be satisfied.

When I carried out this exercise myself a few years ago, I ( and a friend) chose 4-5 CD tracks I knew well and did the store trials in a single morning. Take notes as you listen such as the clarity and detail you can hear - the memory of how something sounds is notoriously short. Make a short list and do it again if necessary.
