Advice on Amp

Hey guys,

I did post a thread a while back but i solved it anyways...

I now face a new problem

im stuck whether to get a home cinema dvd amp or a hifi seperate. Or 5.1 vs 2.1 if you wish...

These are the two amps ive chosen which will power two front speakers and one subwoofer, what would sound best ?

Re: Advice on Amp

The dedicated stereo receiver is more likely to give you reasonable stereo, than an AV receiver which has to pack in seven amplifiers etc. Though the only way to tell definitively is to listen ...

Re: Advice on Amp

It's all a question of budget. Expect to pay 3.5 times as much for 7 channels as for 2.

If you only have 2.1 speakers, getting a 7 channel A/V amp (your Onkyo option) is obviously paying for 5 channels you don't need. If your budget is restricted, this translates to a sound quality reduction.

Your NAD choice does not have DVD (DD, dts) decoding - rather you use the 2 channel analogue outputs from the DVD player. Remember a receiver is an amplifier with a built in tuner, the word is completely unrelated to any A/V functionality. To receive the LFE channel (the .1), your DVD player will need to redirect the LFE into the stereo L&R - this is unfortunately not the case on all players, so you will need to check this. The subwoofer is then driven from the speaker level outputs; therefore you will need to buy a sub with speaker (high) level inputs.

You may also wish to look for a 2.1 A/V amp (or receiver) as a third option.

Re: Advice on Amp

My advice is to keep to stereo products if you listen to more stereo than 5.1. Ie CD, Radio, TV or Vinyl. Here is a very interesting amp from Sony has digital inputs so you can route your DVD towards it digitally, you can attach a sub via the high level connection ie binding posts. I think 2.1 stereo systems sound excellent for stereo and AV effects. Am excellent compromise towards enjoying AV soundtracks on DVD.

There are plenty of stereo amps out there BTW, I have just purchased an old Sony ES amp off ebay that also has 3 digital inputs too.

Re: Advice on Amp

Thanks for your advice everyone ]

The main use of the Amp will be for music...

So the NAD will be better...can i attach a rca music cable to an input then into my computer or mp3 player?

Also if i went with the NAD,the subwoofer out would need a subwoofer RCA cable then attach that to the subwoofer's LFE input? Correct ?

Then with the subwoofer attached to the sub out, i could then power my two front speakers with the left and right binding post channels .

Sorry if im being a bit thick here but im a bit new

You seem to know what you are doing, we all had to start somewhere
All of the above will work fine.
Just watch the output volume of the Pc and the mp3 player when you first connect them as if too high could cause a bit of distortion.

Should sound real nice, Nads are great amps.

Re: Advice on Amp

Ok then cool

I have another question now (yes another lol!)

Im still stuck between the cinema amp and the normal nad amp,

If i chose the home cinema amp for dvd (5.1 or 7.1 surround) would i be able to connect my two front speakers and power them through that ?

Also could i add an equalizer to the dvd amp to control the seperate frequencys ? And could anyone suggest me or point me in the right direction of one ?

I understand that i need to plug an equalizer into a rca input?

thanks for the help
