Calling all Sony Mini Hi-fi owners (with USB entry)

Dear all,

I have just brought back from France a Sony CMT-BX3 which was answering my need for a cheap stereo to hook itself to a hard drive and be able to read its MP3 files.

After testing a few stereos in the store, the Sony seemed the best. However, I now have found out that it cannot handle more than 999 files, which is very limiting when the hard drive has about 7000 !!!
When reading the blurb from the manual, it seems to differentiate between a USB storage device, which cannot have more than 999 files, and a digital media device which can handle 65,000 folders with 999 files in them.

Is there anyway I can turn my HD into one of those ? or potentially find out which structure I need to have on my HD to allow the hi-fi to read all the files ?

Thanks for your help !!!

The manual seems a bit confusing. Just guessing, but I think what it is basically saying is that you cannot access more that 999 files in any single folder. If however, you have your music files arranges so that for example, each album is in it's own folder, then I think you will be ok; providing you don't have more that 65,000 folders in any one directory.

Thanks for the answer, and I totally agree with you - the manual makes you believe that you *should* be able to have a multitude of folders - but it does not behave like that - I have the feeling that it considers my hard drive as a usb stick. I did originally have a number of folders, but got rid of them to try things out - it is behaving very very strangely.
Would Sony be able to help if I asked one of their support staff ? Or do they simply tell you to sod off if you try to plug 'unsupported' devices ?
