Re: sony hi fi

Hi Tricia, welcome to the board.

If your amplifier has a 'phono' input on it then all as you will need to do is go out and buy a turntable, that will come with all the relevant connections. If it does not, then you will have to purchase a phono preamp to sit between your TT and amp, you will probably need a set of phono leads as well.

Your local dealer will be able to show you how it is all connected.

Re: sony hi fi

many thanks for your help, at the back of the amp can see scart lead sockets for video 1 and tv, connecter holes for video 2 and AUX so looks like i will have to buy what you have advised.

Re: sony hi fi

A phono input looks like a pair of RCA sockets labeled phono or turntable, and with a separate ground with a screw connector and labeled ground or earth. The presence of SCART and video sockets is orthogonal.

Re: sony hi fi

Have you worked out how to connect your CD player to the amplifier yet? From what I can see it plugs in to the sockets on the far left of the rear panel marked AUX. To listen to it, you then have to select the AUX button on the front panel.

If you have a turntable it would connect in exactly the same way as your CD player. However, an amplifier of this kind won't be equipped to receive the signal from a turntable so you'd have to buy a little gizmo to translate the turntable signal into something the amplifier can understand. That's the phono preamp that MikeFaulkner refers to above, also sometimes called a phono stage. You plug your turntable into the phono stage then plug the phono stage into the amplifier.

The only problem is, you'll have to keep disconneting and connecting the plugs round the back of the amplifier every time you want to switch from CD player to turntable or vice versa.

And no, I don't what orthogonal means either!
