I bought a motherboard that had SPDIF out. I then run SPDIF into my amp, and let the amp take care of all the decode. Basically, I bypass the soundcard on the PC.
Seems to work. My box downstairs isn't a shuttle however (it's massive). Don't know how common SPDIF out is on a motherboard I'm afraid.
Edit to add - if you don't currently have an amp/speakers, then I also run a Logitech system upstairs that is 5.1, and does digital decode by itself (so I can connect the 360). So you could do SPDIF out of the PC, and into the Logitech.
It's an earlier version of the "Z-5500 Digital", and I'm pretty happy with it. Not cheap mind you...
