Newbie needing advice

Hey guys, I'm new here and don't know a whole lot about Hi Fi systems and such so the route I'm taking might sound ass-backwards, but hey, what can ya do!!

I bought a Sony 52inch xbr4 LCD... and threw it up on my wall and set it up with my old and cheap yamaha receiver and 5.1 system...

Then I bought a PS3 (for blueray and dvd's) and realized that I needed an hdmi AV receiver...

Then I bought a NAD T785 and now realize that my speakers are just not gonna cut it...

I would like to spend (hopefully!) under US $5 grand and preferably under $4 grand on a 5.1 to 7.1 set up... I've done hours of research on speakers and am going bonkers trying to figure out the best way to go (I'd even buy a great used set to gain quality to save $$). I love music and movies so I would prefer a speaker set up that is capable for both.

Any help/guidance or a shopping list including what size cables and connectors to get would be a HUGE help!!!!

The system is in a room that is 20 x 23 feet and none of the cables would need to be longer than 30 feet...

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your advice!

Find a good dealer, tell them what you’re after and the budget you’ve got, and audition their recommends. If you don’t like what they’ve got to offer then go to another dealer until you find something you do like. Seek out other peoples opinions but remember, just because someone else likes a particular system, it doesn’t mean you will.

Thanks, that was my plan... I just want to go into a dealer with some advice already in hand. I guess I have an inherent distrust for dealers as they seem to (in my experience) always want to peddle the lines they carry... It should be expected when you're dealing with sales people that make commissions I guess...

I suppose I should “state for the record” that I’m not a dealer.

There are good and bad dealers.

When I first moved to Glasgow I went to a shop where they tried to pressure me into buying, I’ve never been back to that particular shop. The shop I use would rather sell me nothing than sell me something that isn’t right for me. They know that a happy customer will come back and almost more importantly, will recommend their shop to others.

Re: Newbie needing advice

I would first decided what is more important to you. Music or films.

You may want to spend more cash on some quality fronts with suitable centre and rears and probably no sub....more music orientated with the cinema effect.

or an all in one package where identical middle quality (probably stand mounts or eggs) are used all around with a sub for extar movie beef.

7.1 is a great idea but look at your room...can you honestly fit it in....i dont know many people that can do it with full size speakers. Unless they have a lot of room behind the main viewing position, you will find your sitting ontop of a speaker which will just annoy you.

Never looked into stateside prices in comparison for kit but I bet you get more for your buck over there so you might get a shock buying here!
